針對這個問題，首先必須瞭解：「主句」和「從句」是什麼呢？一個英文句子有時可細分為子句（clause），而子句又分為主要子句（main clause）和從屬子句（subordinate clause），主要子句可以獨立存在、表達意義，而從屬子句則不能單獨存在，必須依附獨立子句才能構成意義。讓我們看一下例句：

英文的句子結構不是太複離: 主要是Main Clause加 subordinate clauses.( 如adverbial clause, adjective clause, noun clause). Main clause is obligatory, whereas adverbial clause is optional. Main clause 係不可缺少而Adverbial clause 係可以省略。第一幅圖既Main Clause 係All citizens are equal before the law。本身已經可以獨立成句，但如果想加添色彩及強調所有市民，可在subject (All citizens)及main verb(are) 之間加前後comma，放上一個adverbial clause ‘’be it a or b’’ 來強調不管其身份及地位（如第二幅圖)。a 和b 是對比字眼，不管是富或貧，有權或無權，有勢或無勢，名流權貴（notables)或平民百姓（men-in-the-street)，法律面前人人平等!
