Differing Extents of Love

“In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another; not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer; contributing to the needs of the saints; given to hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless, and don’t curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind one toward another. Don’t set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Don’t be wise in your own conceits. Repay no one evil for evil. Respect what is honorable in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, “Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.” Therefore “If your enemy is hungry, feed him. If he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in doing so, you will heap coals of fire on his head.” Don’t be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans‬ ‭12:10-21‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

This is the kind of faith that God is pleased with. Not just talking about it, but walking in love as much as possible, especially towards our household of the faith, just like our Lord Jesus did.

When Jesus told us to love one another, He was referring to brotherly love between Christians. Paul also makes it clear by saying, “In the love of the brothers”.

To those who are outside, we are taught to “repay no one evil for evil”, “respect what is honorable in the sight of all men”, and “as much as is possible, be at peace with all men”.

The extent to which we are supposed to love Christians and those who aren’t believers yet, differs.

“Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let’s do what is good toward all men, and especially toward those who are of the household of the faith.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭6:9-10‬ ‭WEB‬‬

Your biological family comes first before those who are outside. You are supposed to feed your family first before giving what you can to strangers or acquaintances. It is the same in terms of prioritizing help.

“But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.” (1 Timothy‬ ‭5:8‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus is not asking you to love a God-hating person the same as a Christian who loves God.

Despite the differences we have in theology and doctrines, if we can agree that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that believing in Him is the only way to be saved, then we are family.

I pray for those who have had bad experiences with fellow Christians, that the trauma in their hearts be healed, and that they will have the desire and ability to bless those who persecuted them. When you pray for your ‘enemies’, you are freeing yourself from the anger, bitterness, pain, and you will be filled with shalom peace.

Abba God: The Best Father

Learning to be a father? You can’t really learn what is important from prenatal classes. Learn it from the Scriptures, through seeing how your heavenly Father, Abba God, is like.

“Sing to God! Sing praises to his name! Extol him who rides on the clouds: to Yah, his name! Rejoice before him! A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.” (Psalms ‭68:4-5‬ ‭WEB‬)

Abba God is a true hero—a father to orphans and a defender of the widows. He who has perfect power protects those who are weak and vulnerable.

““Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened. Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew ‭7:7-11‬ ‭WEB‬)

Abba God is good to His children. He knows when to give them good things that they ask for.

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.” (James ‭1:17‬ ‭WEB‬)

Abba God definitely does not give evil things. There is no evil in Him at all—He is fully good.

“and you have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children, “My son, don’t take lightly the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are reproved by him; For whom the Lord loves, he chastens, and scourges every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you endure. God deals with you as with children, for what son is there whom his father doesn’t discipline? But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then are you illegitimate, and not children. Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much rather be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and live? For they indeed, for a few days, punished us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. All chastening seems for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.” (Hebrews ‭12:5-11‬ ‭WEB‬)

Abba God disciplines us out of love, so that we will profit from it. When emerge from the chastening process, we become partakers of His holiness, meaning we are set apart from every form of death (sickness, poverty, strife, depression, anger, addictions, etc).

“Be therefore imitators of God, as beloved children. Walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling fragrance.” (Ephesians ‭5:1-2‬ ‭WEB‬)

When we know that our God is good and He is love, we can imitate our Abba God as beloved children. We too can walk in love, towards our children, our spouse, and our fellow men. All this is made possible by having a good opinion of Abba God, which keeps us in a state of faith!

Not Impressed by the Reputations of Men

“God had given me a clear revelation to go and confer with the other apostles concerning the message of grace I was preaching to the non-Jewish people. I spoke privately with those who were viewed as senior leaders of the church. I wanted to make certain that my labor and ministry for the Messiah had not been based on a false understanding of the gospel...Even the most honored and esteemed among the brothers were not able to add anything to my message. Who they are before men makes no difference to me, for God is not impressed by the reputations of men.” (Galatians‬ ‭2:2, 6‬ ‭TPT‬‬)

I love the apostle Paul’s mindset. He was not ‘starstruck’ by Peter, James, and John.

Whereas others would have been intimidated by the fame and reputation of the apostles in Jerusalem, Paul wasn’t.

He was led by God to go and meet them, and the only reason he wanted to speak with them was to confirm that he was preaching the correct Gospel.

Paul valued praise from God, not the praises of men.

If God is not impressed by the reputations of men, then as His children we shouldn’t be impressed too.

There is no need to feel intimidated when speaking to someone with a glorified title.

“When he went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees on a Sabbath to eat bread, they were watching him.” (Luke‬ ‭14:1‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus went to a party where the most respected Pharisees were, and He still spoke straightforwardly, without mincing His words. He was not afraid to speak the truth, even if it offended reputable men.

“He spoke a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they chose the best seats, and said to them, “When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, don’t sit in the best seat, since perhaps someone more honorable than you might be invited by him, and he who invited both of you would come and tell you, ‘Make room for this person.’ Then you would begin, with shame, to take the lowest place. But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes, he may tell you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at the table with you. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back. But when you make a feast, ask the poor, the maimed, the lame, or the blind; and you will be blessed, because they don’t have the resources to repay you. For you will be repaid in the resurrection of the righteous.”” (Luke‬ ‭14:7-14‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Jesus’ words above are essentially meaning that the guests at the party were pretentious hypocrites, all trying to curry favor with the rich and famous. Think about how offensive these words would be to most people at the party.

We are a new creation in Christ in contrast to the children of Adam. We are the new and improved version 2.0. Children of Adam are transgressors, whereas children of God are royal priests and heirs of His estate.

Even the wealthiest unbeliever is only like a piece of firewood, due to be thrown in the unquenchable fires of Hell when he dies.

As for speaking to fellow believers, God’s word says that we are one in Christ and that titles don’t matter—we are all of equal standing. We are all saved by one Lord, born-again of the same Spirit, and none of us earned this salvation—it’s all by grace through faith.

“For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians‬ ‭3:26-28‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

Don’t get me wrong, Paul respected the office of apostle which Peter, James, and John held. These positions are given by God. Paul also teaches us to respect the governing bodies and submit to them for the Lord’s sake.

We should also respect our leaders in church for the sake of the offices that they hold since they are ordained by God. Give them proper honor for the sake of the office. Submit to those who have the authority over us, as this authority was given by God.

However, we don’t need to fear reputable men. You don’t have to shrink back, feeling like you are somehow less important, less worthy, or less loved. God loves you even as (as much as) He loves Jesus—that’s how important you are to Him!

If people abuse their office of authority and mistreat you, they themselves will be accountability for it before Jesus. Maybe their eternal rewards will be given to you instead, to restore you for the injustice.

“Jesus answered, “You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin.”” (John‬ ‭19:11‬ ‭WEB‬‬)

No one can harm you when God is protecting you. Men have no power of their own. Therefore, be bold and have confidence in Christ. Straighten your shoulders and back, and raise your chin up. Be set free from the fear of reputations of men!
