When you’re having a nice meal on a plate, you’ll probably want something to wash it down with in a cup. And while you’re eating, why not learn a few idioms related to cups?
當你吃著大餐，你大概會想用杯子配點喝的來清清喉嚨吧！不妨在吃飯的時候，跟著EZ TALK學學跟杯子有關的諺語吧。
Some people like tea, and some people don’t, but what does it mean when you say that 1⃣ something (or someone) isn’t your cup of tea? It means it’s not something you like or have an interest in. Ex: Heavy metal isn’t really my cup of tea. Teacups are obviously made to hold tea, but what if there’s a tempest in a teacup? 2⃣ The phrase “a tempest in a teacup” (or “a tempest in a teapot”) is used to describe a great disturbance or uproar over a matter of little importance. Ex: The protests are nothing more than a tempest in a teapot. You may prefer coffee or tea in your cup, but what if 3⃣ a person is “in his/her cups”? It’s either a really small person, or a really big cup, right? Wrong. It means he’s drunk. Ex: Patrick doesn’t make much sense when he’s in his cups.
有些人愛喝茶，有些人不愛。不過當你說某東西或某人 isn’t your cup of tea是什麼意思？表示「不是你的菜，你沒興趣」。如：Heavy metal isn’t really my cup of tea.（重金屬搖滾不是我的菜。）茶杯當然是用來盛茶的器具，不過要是茶杯裡頭出現風暴，那是怎麼一回事呢？片語a tempest in a teacup/teapot「茶杯／茶壺裡的風暴」是用來敘述無關緊要的小事卻造成極大騷動，也就是「大驚小怪」。如：The protests are nothing more than a tempest in a teapot.（那場抗議不過只是大驚小怪。）你會喜歡杯子裡裝著美味的咖啡或茶，不過要是裡面的東西換成一個人呢？這就得要是非常迷你的人，又或是杯子得要夠大才有辦法吧？錯了。其實片語in his/her cups指的是這人「喝得醉醺醺」，如：Patrick doesn’t make much sense when he’s in his cups.（當派崔克喝掛，他講話基本上沒人聽得懂。）
