This work includes illustrations from original watercolors by Charles Edward Faxon and James Henry Emerton, both of whom were naturalists and illustrators. Emerton's speciality was arachnology, but he produced illustrations on a wide range of natural history subjects. Faxon was a botanist who worked at the Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, assisting with the development of the herbarium and library.
The work also includes text by Daniel Cady Eaton, an American botanist who served as botany professor and herbarium curator at Yale University.
