Deck the halls with boughs of holly, Fa la la la la la la la. 🎄 🎊⛄🍬

We had our first ever Christmas themed mini photoshoot with @bloomphotographysg and the kids enjoyed every bit of the session because of the cosy setup, amazing props and friendly folks who made them feel at ease.

The whole session lasted merely 30 minutes yet there was not just one but three beautiful backdrops that we used during the session, namely the fireplace, cabin and snowy window side. Swipe to see more.

This European-style cabin Christmas theme makes me miss our days living in Scandinavia and we actually had a real fireplace in our home then, not to mention the firstborn came right in the midst of a snowy winter. Yup, memories are what makes us cherish the past, appreciate the present and look forward to the future. That is why family photos are so precious to me and I deeply cherish each and every of our photoshoots.

It might be a more silent Christmas this year but hopefully we will still be able to celebrate this season of giving and sharing. BIG thanks to @bloomphotographysg and @suwen_newus for all the wonderful photos and priceless memories. ❤

I was doing spring cleaning and packing our wardrobes, starting with the kids followed by mine. Then I realised that we have still kept all our winter clothing, including the coats, fleece jackets, thermal wear, gloves, thick socks, mittens and all. That means they have been sitting there for a good 8 years - and not been used at all since we returned from Scandinavia. Haha.

The question is how long should we continue to keep them? Since our house has no storeroom, we can definitely with more storage space if we choose to free it up. Yet, the thought of the money we had invested makes it hard to let go and more importantly, there is still that lingering hope that one day, we might be able to travel (again) and bring the kids to somewhere where they might finally see snow. Yup, only the eldest has done that and that was because she was born in Sweden during winter.

In the end, I still chose to keep everything intact because of the hope they symbolised to me, which is even more significant during this period where we can only reminisce about past travels.

We might not be able to go on a vacation for quite some time and it gets more expensive to have family trips as the kids get older, but we will always hope for the chance to do so someday and in the meantime, think about and be grateful for all the beautiful cities we have set foot in, sights we have seen and memories we have made.

Well the weather is so hot these days so it was great to take a break to enjoy the freezing cold moments here. Learn how to recognise symptoms of mild altitude sickness, as well as the potentially deadly HAPE and HACE (fluid in the lungs/brain). Plenty of advice on how to prepare for the trek, plan a safe itinerary, and what to pack.
Follow our family, including our 11-year old son Lionel, on the Annapurna Circuit in winter. See how the altitude affected us as we climbed Thorong La (5,416 meters/ 17769 feet) – Kirk struggled with his breathing, Lionel felt nauseous, and I had mild hypothermia But we all made it safely in the end.

SUMMARY
*Watch out: some people may feel unwell as low as 2,000 meter (6,500 feet).
*Plan a slower ascent above 3,000 meters (10,000 feet)
*Climb high, sleep low. To be safe, only gain 300 meters (1,000 feet) in sleeping elevation at high altitude.
*If you climb faster than the recommended rate, you can build a rest days every three or four days to acclimatise.
*If you suffer from mild altitude sickness, drink a lot, and rest
*Avoid alcohol, which slows down breathing and makes you dehydrated. Avoid sleeping pills. And smoking will certainly not help!
*If you see no improvement, spend an extra night at the same altitude
*If you feel worse, descend to the last place where you felt well
*If you develop HAPE or HACE, this is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate descent of and specialist medical care. You may have to descend in the middle of the night, don't wait till morning. Once fluid builds up in the brain or lungs, you can die in a matter of hours.

DISCLAIMER
This video is based on first-hand experience of struggling with the altitude on the Annapurna Circuit. We also spent decades of travelling in the Himalayas and Alps. With three decades in TV journalism, I've also done extensive research on the impact of high altitude.

I am NOT a doctor, and I do not have direct experience of taking drugs for altitude sickness like Diamox / Acetazolamide or Nifedipine for HAPE or the use of Gamow bags for hyperbaric treatment. So I have not included any information on this topic. Only sticking to what I have first-hand experience of.

I hope this video helps you plan a safe and enjoyable trek.
