#喬治卡林翻譯第4彈
「真正的藍調音樂家不只要知道怎麼演奏，還要熟悉音樂背後的悲傷與痛苦。」（"It's not enough to know which notes to play, you got to know why they need to be played."）
會想翻這個段子，是因為最近在課上讀到美國南北戰爭時代，重要的反蓄奴運動人物Frederick Douglass的自傳"The Narrative of the Life"。黑奴出身並成功脫逃的道格拉斯，在回憶起被奴役的童年時，提到農場裡工作的黑奴，時常會吟唱不成調的破碎歌曲。而在那些他人無法理解的曲調裡，埋藏的其實就是黑奴無法為外人道的巨大悲傷、痛苦以及憤怒。
這樣椎心的字句，讓我想到卡林的這個段子。藍調音樂與黑人靈歌這類創作，其根源都是黑人對自己血淚史的追悼，蘊生自長久加諸他們身上的奴役與壓迫，或可被視為一種抒發乃至療傷的儀式。
也因此，卡林的重點並非白人無法成為優秀的藍調樂手，而是白人無視自己的身份、跳上舞台演奏藍調這種行為，到底有多諷刺：他們演奏的、恰是由於自己的壓迫與暴行，而在他人身上留下的悲傷的結晶；這該是多麻木不仁的行為？這正是卡林想批判的重點：長久宰制社會的白人，未必真能看見，自己在他人身上留下的傷疤。
而這正是各種霸權(hegemony)的可怕之處：我們活在一個由父權、異性戀以及白種人等各種霸權宰制的世界，而身處這些結構高處的既得利益者，未必看的見他們腳底下正因壓迫而受苦的人們。而當公民意識崛起、轉型正義的概念開始流行，他們也開始學習說些中性的字眼、往臉上抹泥巴，自認那是尊重與平等的展現（也真的會有人被這樣騙到）；殊不知真正的平等，要等這些霸權踏下王座、扶起以往被壓迫的人們，才能真正實現。在掌權者真正正視他們與被壓迫者之間的落差，並試圖平衡之前，一切都只是偽善。
