ถึงแม้ว่าจะมีวิกฤตไวรัสที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อสายการบินทั่วโลกไม่เว้นแต่สายการบินสัญชาติเยอรมันอย่าง Lufthansa
แต่สายการบินก็ยังไม่ละทิ้งเป้าหมายด้านความยั่งยืนและสร้างประวัติศาสตร์ ที่จะทำการบินเที่ยวบินปลอดคาร์บอนจาก
"สนามบินแฟรงก์เฟิร์ตไปยังเซี่ยงไฮ้ประเทศจีน"
ในวันอาทิตย์ที่ 29.11.20 ด้วยรุ่น 777F เที่ยวบิน LH8406 ซึ่งนับว่าเที่ยวบินนี้เป็นเที่ยวบินปลอดคาร์บอนในเชิงพาณิชย์เที่ยวแรกของโลก
ซึ่งเชื้อเพลิงที่จะใช้ทำการบินในเที่ยวบินนี้จะใช้เชื้อเพลิงที่เรียกว่า Sustainable Aviation Fuel หรือ SAF ซึ่งเป็นเชื้อเพลิงทางชีวภาพที่มีส่วนผสมหลักจากจากสารชีวภาพต่างๆ ที่จะผลิตก๊าซ CO2 น้อยกว่าเชื้อเพลิงแบบปกติ และหลังจากนั้นทางสายการบินจะทำการ Offset
และนอกจากนี้ Lufthansa ยังได้มีการลงนามและแสดงเจตนารมณ์อย่างชัดเจนว่าจะกลายเป็นองค์กรที่ไม่ผลิตคาร์บอนเลยภายในปี 2050 หรือ
"Zero Carbon Emission 2050 Strategy"
