陳太:「我現在懷孕32周,朋友都說我要清胎毒,要吃西瓜和飲白蓮鬚糖水,否則會把濕疹傳給寶寶。」
CheckCheckCin:不少孕媽媽以為懷孕覺得很熱就是有「胎毒」,胎兒屬「元陽之軀」,孕婦感到熱是正常的,假如你在孕期過度進補、多吃辛辣煎炸食物、經常熬夜,以致出現喉乾口渴、口瘡口氣、暗瘡、尿黃便秘、心情暴躁等體內偏熱症狀,才需要適量為身體清熱清胎毒。然而清胎毒必須靠醫師的辨證論治,對症下藥,因為每位孕婦的體質都不一樣。坊間流傳的白蓮鬚有清心益腎、益血固精作用,主治夢泄遺精、吐血崩漏、瀉痢,建議孕婦經醫師診治下才服用。如果孕婦體質本身偏寒涼、虛弱,胡亂自行「清胎毒」,反傷母子正氣。
濕疹是很普遍的皮膚病,如父母雙方都有濕疹,遺傳給孩子的機會高達七成;濕疹除遺傳因素外,空氣、環境、塵蟎、食物敏感等都可致病,與其只顧「清胎毒」,不如微調生活及飲食習慣,避免過份進補、減少進食辛辣、重口味食物。

Clear toxins during pregnancy to prevent eczema?

CheckCheckCin: Many pregnant women think the heat in their bodies is due to ‘toxins in the fetus’. Since fetuses are ‘body of the primordial yang, it is common for pregnant mothers to have excessive heat.
If you are over-nourished during the pregnancy, always consuming hot, spicy, and deep-fried foods excessively, and staying up late, and if you develop symptoms such as dry throat, persistent thirst, canker sore, bad breath, acne, yellow urine, and bad temper, then you probably have excessive heat. Hence, you should clear the heat and fetal toxins accordingly. Please note that it is important to consume the right medicine that the doctor prescribed because every pregnant woman has different body constitutions.
Rumors have it that Nelumbinis stamen, or the stamen of the lotus, is good for the heart and kidneys and can strengthen the essence of the body, and it is often used to treat nocturnal emission, hematemesis and metrorrhagia, and diarrhea. Nevertheless, pregnant women should seek professional medical advice before consuming it. If an individual’s body is cold and weak, the act of ‘clearing the fetal toxins’ would only cause more harm than good to both the mother and the fetus.
Eczema is a common skin problem. If both parents have this problem, their children would have 70% chance of getting it too. Moreover, the environment around us, the air we breathe, dust mites, and food allergies are also among the non-hereditary causes. Instead of focusing on ‘clearing the fetal toxins’, we should adjust our lifestyle and dietary habits, avoid over-nourishing our body, and cut down on hot, spicy, and heavily flavored foods.

章魚湯益氣養血
韓國人喜歡吃活章魚,日本人愛吃章魚丸,廣東人則喜歡用章魚乾煲湯,最常見的材料配搭有節瓜和綠豆,煲出來的湯水味道濃郁好喝。從中醫角度來看,章魚性寒,有益氣養血的功效,適合氣血兩虛人士食用,對女性產後氣血虧損、乳汁不足,男性強精養氣都有幫助。節瓜又名小冬瓜,但不似冬瓜般寒涼,屬性平和,具利水消腫、健脾益胃之效。而綠豆有清熱解毒、消暑祛濕的作用。所以這款湯水能清熱解毒、養血滋陰。
食材小貼士:
陳皮性溫,能理氣健脾、祛濕化痰。能紓緩寒痰、胃脘脹滿、肚瀉、孕婦及宿醉人士的作悶欲吐等。
節瓜章魚綠豆湯
功效:清熱解毒、養血滋陰,紓緩因為壓力大而睡不安寧、疲倦等症狀。
材料:節瓜2-3個、紅蘿蔔2根、章魚乾1塊、綠豆30克、黃豆30克、蜜棗2枚、陳皮1角
做法:
1. 所有材料洗淨,節瓜及紅蘿蔔去皮切塊;章魚乾泡水至軟身備用。
2. 鍋中加入2000毫升水,放入全部材料,武火煮至水滾,調文火煮1.5小時,最後下鹽調味即可。

Octopus soup can nourish qi and blood
Koreans enjoy eating live octopus, Japanese like takoyaki (octopus ball), and the Cantonese loves making dried octopus soup. The other common ingredients that would go into the same pot are hairy gourd and mung bean, as they would enrich the flavor of the soup.
From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, octopus is cold in nature, and it nourishes qi and blood. Hence, it is suitable for individuals with asthenic qi and blood. Eating octopus is also good for women who experience blood and qi deficiency after giving birth, mothers with low milk supply, and men who wish to strengthen their qi and essence.
Hairy gourd is not as cool as winter gourd because it is mild in nature. The former induces urination, relieves edema, and strengthens the spleen and stomach. Mung bean, on the other hand, clears heat and toxins, dissipates the summer-heat, and dispels dampness from the body. Therefore, this particular soup can flush out the heat and toxins from the body and nourish the yin and the blood.
Tips on ingredient:
Dried citrus peel is warm in nature; can improve qi circulation and strengthen the spleen, dispel dampness and clear phlegm; relieve phlegm caused by cold, bloating, as well the nauseous feeling pregnant women and individuals who get hangovers would experience.
Hairy gourd and octopus soup with mung bean
Effects: Clears heat and detoxifies, nourishes blood yin. It can relieve symptoms such as itchy skin and insomnia.
Ingredients: 2-3 hairy gourd, 2 carrot, 1 piece dried octopus, 30g mung bean, 30g soya bean, 2 candied dates, 1 dried citrus peel
Preparation:
1. Rinse all ingredients thoroughly. Peel and cut hairy gourd and carrot into pieces. Soak dried octopus in water until softened.
2. Combine all ingredients with 2000ml of water in a pot and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 1.5 hours. Add salt to taste.

材料:絲瓜絡10克、荷葉10克、麥冬9克、冰糖適量
做法:材料洗淨放保溫瓶,以熱開水沖洗一遍,注入熱開水焗約15-20分鐘至香味透出,待水變暖後加入蜂蜜拌勻即可。此茶能反覆沖泡至味淡,建議一星期飲用兩至三天,連續兩星期為一個療程。

Luffa to clear heat and slim down
Luffa is an important heat-relieving vegetable to consume during summer. The more common variety in Hong Kong is angular luffa (another type of luffa is cylindrical in shape). A premium-grade angular luffa normally has clear angular edges, meets a certain weight requirement, and is compact.
From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, luffa is cool in nature, and it can clear heat and toxins from the body. Its fibers can also promote the circulation of the meridians, clear heat, clear phlegm, induce urination, and relieve edema. Hence, it is suitable for individuals who are plump in size and have a damp heat body constitution. Consuming an appropriate amount of luffa can also help with weight loss.
Consider eating luffa during summer (based on our body constitution), as it can help relieve heat-related symptoms such as dry mouth, cough, phlegm, and smelly vaginal discharge. Luffa, on the other hand, is good for pregnant mothers or mothers who have just delivered their babies, as the vegetable is good for the fetus and can increase milk flow.
Luffa - cold in nature, it clears heat and removes toxins, reduces phlegm, stabilizes pregnancy and aids lactation. When taken appropriately, it can relieve summer-related symptoms such as dry mouth, cough with yellow phlegm, alleviate high volume of vaginal discharge or discharge that has strong odor, and improve postpartum lactation difficulty.
Luffa pith - mild in nature, it can improve the Meridian’s circulation, promote diuresis to relieve bloating.
Tea remedy to clear summer heat
Effects: Clears heat and dispels dampness. Relieves heat stroke, excessive sweating and fatigue.
Ingredients: 10g luffa pith, 10g lotus leaves, 9g radix ophiopogonis, rock sugar to taste
Preparation: Rinse all ingredients thoroughly and place into thermos, rinse with hot water once. Then add in hot water again and steep for 15-20 minutes. Add an appropriate amount of rock sugar and mix until it melts. You can re-brew this tea until its flavor weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks for a treatment.

How painful can breastfeeding get?
I have heard that it's more painful than birthing.
Breastfeeding might look simple but only those who have breastfed could understand all the pain and "hard"ship our breasts go through in this process.
Is it worth it?
Absolutely, and it doesn't have to be that painful if you can prepare well.
Too little breastmilk is a problem, and guess what, too much milk is a big issue too.
When we produce too much, our breast might be super engorged and become so hard that it's unbearable to even touch.
The worst situation is if the breasts are infected, have mastitis or even have white blisters on the nipple.
What can mothers do when these situations arise?
