Interview with A Founder: Alvin Kwock (Co-founder of OneDegree )
By Sophie Chiu (AppWorks Associate)
Alvin Kwock is the Co-founder of OneDegree, an alumnus from AppWorks Accelerator #16. Founded in 2016, OneDegree is a technology startup aiming to become the next-generation insurance industry leader in Asia. The company hit a major milestone in April this year when it received a virtual insurance license, making it one of the first batch of firms authorized to sell insurance through online-only channels in Hong Kong. Since then, OneDegree has launched the city’s first pure medical insurance for pets, which will be followed by cyber and health insurance products and more.
【Having such a fruitful year, can you recall the most challenging / rewarding moment that you have come across during your start-up journey?】
Our earliest days, fundraising and try to win trust from potential investors, were definitely the most challenging. In order to operate legally, we had to apply for an insurance license, which required at least US$30 million of paid-in capital. We met with many investors and there were some who turned us down immediately, telling us there was no way we can raise that amount at a pre-revenue stage. However, we were tenacious and just kept pitching. One investor in particular said no to us 3 times, but we eventually won their support on the 4th attempt. Our technology is our moat, and we worked hard to demonstrate to investors and partners the revolutionary nature of what OneDegree can offer. A big insurance firm, which approached us about a partnership, told us that they could spend US$100 million and still not be able to replicate the powerful insurance core platform OneDegree has built. Getting to where we are today was not easy, hurdle after hurdle, but an incessant belief in our mission helped us get through all the challenges.
【As a founder, what would be some advice for newcomers starting their business?】
Creative thinking is often emphasized as the most important skill or attribute for entrepreneurs. However, in my own experience, building trust is even more important. Trust is an effective tool to facilitate transfer of your creativity to the people who work with you. Over half of our employees are shareholders of OneDegree, which contributes to an environment of trust and collaboration. I believe that a team can only be successful if it plays together. To build trust with clients, we have to show them that we have the ability to deliver and to consistently provide them with something of value. We demonstrated this through our debut insurance product. For example, we pledged to pay out claims within 2 days – much faster than traditional insurers – and we’ve managed to deliver on that.
【Eventually, what impact do you want to have?】
OneDegree’s goal is to become the gold standard in the insurance industry. We aspire not only to serve customers of our insurance business, but also to maximize the impact through partnerships with like-minded insurers, banks and eCommerce channels globally. We want to make the insurance experience entirely seamless for our customers, and we will be relentless about this. Settling claims within 2 days may sound fast today, but it is not too hard to imagine that in a few years’ time the process may only take minutes, or even seconds, to complete. We strive to be at the forefront of change, helping insurance companies become more efficient and making it easier for all end users to get the protection they need, with a simple click or tap on their devices. This is the impact I want to have.

【Donation of 100,000 surgical masks to Ethiopia to extend humanitarian assistance in wake of COVID-19】
On behalf of the Republic of China (Taiwan), Representative Matthew W. Chou of the Taipei Liaison Office in the RSA handed 100,000 surgical masks to the government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia at the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Pretoria on 18 June 2020.
There are more than 8 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus reported worldwide so far, and nearly 440,000 people died from the illness. But Taiwan has managed to keep the coronavirus at bay, with only 445 cases and 7 deaths so far. Taiwan has reported no new locally transmitted cases in 8 consecutive weeks.
Taiwan has never implemented any large-scale lockdowns or stay-home order since the beginning of the outbreak. Businesses and all kinds of economic activities continue normal operations.
Taiwan’s National Health Insurance ensures everyone to receive medical care and testing when needed, Taiwan also took early and proactive response toward the pandemic, for those reasons, Taiwan has achieved significant success on containing the coronavirus pandemic. Taiwan can help and Taiwan is helping. Meanwhile, Taiwan has actively launched international epidemic prevention cooperation and humanitarian assistance since the outbreak. The donation of the surgical masks is just the first step for Taiwan to join Ethiopia’s efforts to fight against coronavirus pandemic together in Africa. Amb. Dr. Shiferaw Teklemariam expressed his appreciation on behalf of the government of Ethiopia, wishing Ethiopia and Taiwan can enhance the cooperation on the fields of health, economy and investment, increasing the bilateral relations pragmatically in the future.
Lastly, Representative Chou wishes to enhance the bilateral relations and connection between Taiwan and Ethiopia, providing and increasing the welfare and benefits for both side.

I am a legislator from Taiwan. Let me share a story about the friendship between Ethiopian and Taiwanese people for you.
—————————————————————————
While Tedros, the director-general of WHO, has been criticizing Taiwan wrongly, Taiwan has been helping Tedros’ Ethiopian fellows for decades.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was born in Asmara ( Ethiopia) in 1965. He served as Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia successively. His professional field is microbiology.
Despite being criticized wrongly by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for racial discrimination, in fact, Taiwan has assisted his hometown of Ethiopia through various semi-official and unofficial channels for many years. Taiwan has been helping Ethiopia in many fields such as health care, nutrition and food assistance, education, children and women ’s rights , Psychological and social support, water resources, improving livelihood capacity and income, emergency relief supplies, etc..
According to the “International Cooperation and Development Foundation(ICDF)” totally supported by the Taiwan government budget, there were several Ethiopian students who participated in the “Program of the International Cooperation and Human Resources Training Workshop” held by ICDF in 2012. Some other students participated in the “Clean Energy Development Strategy program” in 2017.
The ICDF said that applications for training must be recommended by the Taiwan Embassy or an international organization. The ICDF will provide financial aid completely for the two-week workshop including the round-trip flight tickets, meals, accommodation and transportation while in Taiwan. The rough estimate of cost was about USD 5,000 for one student.
In addition, there were 5 Ethiopian personnels participated in the "Medical Staff Training Program for Friendly Nations Program" held by ICDF in 2018. The trainees were trained in the Pediatrics Department of Mackay Memorial Hospital and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Tri-Service General Hospital in Taiwan. The ICDF and the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs are responsible for the expenses.
The 5 trainees were trained in Taiwan for 1 to 3 months. Besides the hospitals’ funding, Taiwan still needed to cover the expense including flight tickets, allowances, insurance, etc.. It cost at least USD 3000 for each one.
Another story was happened in March of 2020. There was a short-term exchange student named Mary from Ethiopia. She needed an emergency operation for venous thrombosis abruptly. Because she was not eligible for Taiwan health insurance, the medical cost was up to USD 50,000. She expressed that she couldn’t afford the surgery. Later, Mary got donation from the hospital healing her, several Taiwanese cherish organizations, and individuals. All the expenses got zeroed by these Taiwanese beneficence.
Yes, Taiwan Government has criticized the director-general of WHO severely. The first reason is his failing to fulfill duties(e.g., he ignored the crucial information provided by Taiwan at Dec 31st in 2019 and the information was about there were 27 cases similar with SARS and highly human-to-human transmission possibilities). This is not about the COLOR. This is about thousands of departed human lives for his failure against Covid-19. Secondly Taiwan is the only one left behind by WHO. This is DISCRIMINATION made by WHO for decades.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO, should apologize to Taiwan and stop being manipulated by China. And Tedros is welcome to visit Taiwan. He may get the briefing of epidemics prevention by Taiwan and see the beauty of Taiwan.
