We had this interview a few months back, on the value of age-appropriate instruction in the Arts. The initial topic was “How to bring Arts into Education.” We found that what people were even more interested in, is “What is Age-Appropriate Arts Education? How can we understand and interact with children better?”

It isn’t enough to equip a child with “arts skills.” The challenge we pose to ourselves is to understand how a child thinks, how a child learns, how a child feels. For a child to express herself meaningfully, she needs to know that she is listened to, and acknowledged for who she is.

By doing so, we value the children’s perspective, and can connect with them in a way that matters. This enables us to do more than just teach the arts— we are enabling children to develop a confidence in themselves that can last their whole life long!

I really believe it is especially important for arts practitioners— whether in production or education— to understand how to manage child behaviour with age-appropriate expectations. I’ll be posting more on this (and hosting workshops) soon. Feel free to connect with me in the meantime!
