Is there a map where we can see the pollution in ocean?
A real-time map for monitoring ocean pollution is quite difficult because it would need installation of equipment in the oceans with uninterrupted connectivity. I found some maps based on the estimates done by some studies which more or less shows the picture about ocean pollution.
1. A Global Map of Human Impact on Marine Ecosystems
A recent study which has mapped the total human impact on the seas for the first time has revealed that almost 40% of the world's oceans have been heavily affected by human activities, including fishing, coastal development and pollution from shipping.
The most severely affected areas are the North Sea, South and East China Seas, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Red Sea, the Gulf, the Bering Sea, the East Coast of North America and the Western Pacific. See image below:
2. Ocean Pollution, Oil Spills
This map has areas affected by oil traffic over the oceans and the locations of some major oil spills that have happened in the recent history.
3. Garbage Patches
Gyres of marine debris (mostly plastic waste and chemical sludge) have accumulated over the years in most of our oceans. A visualization from NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio explains how these garbage patches end up there.
