Ali is only 5 years old but he’s already in Year 1. Here in the UK, your school year is counted based on your date of birth. And because Ali was born on 2nd July 2015, which is before September, he is among the youngest in his batch.
Last year during the first lockdown, Ali was in Reception. So, he hasn’t experienced much of the online learning. Only a few sessions catching up on their emotional well-being and to keep in touch with his teachers and friends
But in September 2020, he started Year 1. So now, in lockdown 3.0, he is having daily Zoom sessions from home. And he is enjoying it to the max - bless him! 🥰

🌟 Meet Precious , The Cat with Liver Shunt 🌟
If you have followed me since last year , you would know that he is previously named Rapmon ( after my fav BTS member ) since his birthday also happen to be today ! 😂
_
Though I love them all equally , I can’t deny the fact that Precious is my fav since birth. ( swipe left for his kitten photos ❤️) He is the first kitten to open his eyes , the first kitten to learn how to climb the stairs to look for me upstairs , and also the first to learn how to drink water lol. He also cry the loudest la ! 😂
_
I was very happy in 2018 ~ my career is well , my cats family expanded from 1 to 8 , I have great friends and everything is perfect till Christmas. 😌 I found out that my Precious has a rare medical condition called “ Liver Shunt “. It’s very rare that my vet said the other cats she knew who has it didn’t survive. This is why his 1st birthday is so meaningful to me. He is a fighter , living well and a happy cat. ❤️
_
It wasn’t easy at first ~ he needs to eat medicine twice a day , I need to purchase special food for him from UK and I need to be at home a lot to monitor his condition. Everytime he feels unwell , I would bring him to vet and my vet would ask me : “ Do you think that he is suffering ? “. It breaks my heart because I don’t want to give up on him. I’m glad that he stay strong with me and ta-da he is 1 year old now ! ❤️
_
Every night he jumps on my chest and head bumps to my face. 😂 Love you little bean !

Last year I took a huge step by leaving my home by birth. There was so little left I recognised.
Secretly I had hoped distance would make the heart see what I had missed as I struggled to hold on to everything that had defined me. I am and have only ever been a child of HK, and the HK people are my people.
Today I find myself more unsettled than I have ever felt, and in a most profound and fundamental way. Distance has only made me realise my home, my history and my family, my values and my self, does not align with the China Dream. In Amazing China there is no place for thought and feelings, there are only political truisms. My home has gone, and its memory fast being eroded and replaced.
To those who identify with HK but doubt this, let me ask, can you to identify with the PRC? This is not China, nor the policies that have, and only through international engagement, raised so many out of poverty. What I refer to specifically is a nature as manifested today in a society blinded to, and afraid to confront, critical self-reflection. Just to think what is done in our name -- at home in the cultural and ethnic genocide in the "autonomous" provinces of Xinjiang and Tibet, but also abroad in the support of world-wide authoritarianism. Dare we even discuss, as my family once could do publicly without fear nor favour, that the party is as foreign to Han Chinese civilisation as the labour rights lawyer. Subtle oppression is so much more vicious than the brute with a bludgeon as whilst the result may be the same, the bludgeon leaves its mark.
My HK had no national dream, we did not need one. We did not need a Greater Bay Area to support and for which to be grateful, we just busied ourselves in what we did and thrived in doing so. And sound and respectable people did not declare to a half Chinese boy that he can never understand his home.
But in leaving I have also become aware, deep down, just how much everything that was HK continues to means to me. How central it is to understanding who I am, and the perhaps innocence of my nature. Whilst I recognise my privilege and am grateful to UK for welcoming me, I have not found a new home in London. I can not as long as I am in transit. I feel an exile from a home I know deep down will never return. This is what unsettles me.
I am sorry for being sensitive in this way. But I can not deny who I am nor who deeply I feel for HK, nor how important it is for me to rediscover a patch of earth in which I might reconnect with myself. Until I am able to lay down roots, in new and foreign soil, to live is merely to die a little each day. And I wonder what part of me will die tomorrow.
That's about all I can bring myself to write. Except to again say that I am sorry. We are not all able to leave the family nest, even as the tree is felled so that a new farmer may sow his seeds. It's hard to write as the tree falls.

In case you didn’t know, in Chinese tradition, women who just delivered a baby will go through a month-long confinement period so that she can get adequate rest and let her body recover from childbirth. During this confinement period, women are encouraged to steer clear of certain daily tasks and certain food. They are also encouraged to increase the intake of certain food ingredients such as ginger, black vinegar, sesame oil and rice wine, etc, which are deemed beneficial for their health.
This pork trotter vinegar recipe we used in this video is from a very experienced confinement nanny who has taken care of hundreds of women on confinement and their babies. The ingredients used in this recipe are believed to be able to help mothers heal and regain their strength faster.
