How was it like to spend the Thanksgiving week in West Africa (Benin, Togo and Ghana)? The spirit of Thanksgiving is celebration of harvest, so what if there is no harvest to celebrate?
It was challenging to travel through these countries as a foreigner -- lack of information, gap in material life plus cultural differences. Many things were unpredictable, and I had to adjust my plan multiple times. And to be honest, yes, I did make some wrong desicions along the way. Fortunately these decisions didn't impact the itinerary too much.
The biggest lesson learned: don't try to be an ultimate budget traveler in West Africa! It's not cheap to travel there, and it's worth to pay more for better safety and more comfort. At the end of the day your life worths much more than your money.
Right now, as I'm ready to board the flight leaving Africa, I think this is a perfect timing for Thanksgiving. So this is the thanks I'd like to say:
