生菜清熱消水腫
「易過食生菜」是廣東話易如反掌的意思，生菜究竟有多容易吃呢？生食熟食皆宜，生菜含水量高，纖維含量比較低，烹煮時間很短已足夠，而且易於咀嚼，的確適合大部份體質人士食用。從中醫角度來看，生菜屬性偏涼，味甘苦，有清熱生津、利尿通乳、消水腫的功效，由於苦味入心，很適合炎熱的夏天食用，因為帶苦的食物有清熱的功效。
除了常見的西生菜，其實生菜家族種類繁多，生菜是菊科萵苣屬的蔬菜，葉萵苣又分為結球、半結球和不結球形態，結球萵苣代表就是西生菜；常用來做沙律的牛油生菜和意大利生菜就是半結球萵苣；而不結球萵苣就有唐生菜及油麥菜。至於萵筍就是莖用萵苣，莖部肥大，其實也是生菜家族的成員。

生菜 — 性涼，有清熱生津、利尿通乳、消水腫的功效，適合小便不暢及水腫者食用，產後母乳不足或乳腺不通皆可適量食用。由於性涼，脾胃虛寒及尿頻者不宜多吃。

Lettuce can clear heat and reduce water retention
In Cantonese, “easier than eating lettuce” is a phrase used to describe something that can be done easily. So how easy is it to eat lettuce? Lettuce can be eaten raw or cooked, has high water content and low in fiber, does not require long hours of cooking. It is also easy to chew, making it suitable for individuals with body condition of all sorts.

From the perspective of Chinese medicine, lettuce is cool in nature, bittersweet in taste, able to clear heat, promote saliva secretion, diuresis and lactation, as well as reduce water retention. Its bitterness also makes it suitable for summer consumption, as the taste is effective in clearing body heat.

Other than the commonly known iceberg lettuce, there are many different varieties within its genus. Lettuce is from the Asteraceae family and the Lactuca genus, and the leafy lactuca (lettuce) is further divided into spherical, semi-spherical and non-spherical types. Iceberg lettuce is one of the spherical types; butter lettuce and Italian lettuce, commonly used in salad, are semi-spherical; whereas examples of non-spherical types are Chinese lettuce and Romaine lettuce. Meanwhile, the augustana variety is thick on its stem, but still belongs to the genus of lettuce.

Lettuce – cool in nature; can clear heat, promote saliva secretion, diuresis and lactation, as well as reduce water retention, suitable for individuals with urination and water retention problems. Mothers who are unable to produce sufficient breast milk after delivery should eat lettuce in an appropriate amount. Since it is cool in nature, individuals who are diuretic and experience asthenic cold in the spleen and stomach should not consume excessively.

Corn is a grain with a special place in the hearts of Americans. First introduced to early settlers by the Indians, it has since become a staple of the American diet, used to make everything from popcorn and muffins to corn chips and corn syrup. Naturally, corn has become part of our language as well.
玉米在美國人心中是種特別的榖物。一開始是由印地安人介紹給最早的一批移民者，自此之後成為美國的重要主食之一，玉米可以用來作成各式各樣的食物，從爆米花、瑪芬、玉米片到玉米糖漿皆可見。理所當然地，玉米也成為英語語言的一部分。

Driving though the Midwest, you’ll pass by endless fields of corn, which is eaten by animals and people alike. The adjective1⃣ “corn-fed” is used to describe animals fed or fattened with corn, i.e. “corn-fed hogs.” What about people? If you call someone corn-fed, it means they look plump, well-fed and robust. Ex: Several corn-fed Midwesterners tried out for the football team. When describing people and places, corn-fed can also mean unsophisticated and provincial. Ex: Karen grew up in a small, corn-fed Kansas town.

在進入用語之前，大家知道oat是什麼嗎？

1⃣ separate the wheat from the chaff.
2⃣ to feel one’s oats
3⃣ a grain of truth
4⃣ take something with a grain of salt

Last time we talked about bread, so this time let’s talk about the stuff it’s of. Yes, I’m talking about grain, usually wheat. Let’s start with an old expression: 1⃣ “separate the wheat from the chaff.” What is “chaff”? you may ask. Chaff is the husks of wheat, oats and other grain. Before grain can be eaten, the husks must be removed, and so “separate the wheat from the chaff” means to sort the valuable from the worthless. Ex: The first round of job interviews is about separating the wheat from the chaff.
上次我們談到麵包，這次我們聊聊麵包的原料。沒錯，我說的就是榖物（grain），最主要的就是小麥（wheat）。先介紹一個俗語：separate the wheat from the chaff（去蕪存菁）。你或許會問，chaff是什麼，其實它是指小麥、燕麥等榖物的糠。要先去糠，榖物才能吃。因此這個俗語就是指，將有用與無用之物分開。如：The first round of job interviews is about separating the wheat from the chaff.（第一輪面試就是要先去蕪存菁。）

Moving on from wheat to oats, we have the expression 2⃣ “to feel one’s oats,” which means “to act frisky or lively, or to feel one’s power or importance.” What does this have to do with oats? Horses love oats, and after they eat them they often become livlier. Ex: What’s up with Brian? He looks like he’s feeling his oats today.
接下來我們改聊燕麥，跟燕麥有關的俗語有：to feel one’s oats，指的是「舉止興高采烈，自命不凡」這個意思怎麼會跟燕麥有關呢？馬兒愛燕麥，每當馬兒吃了燕麥，牠們總是變得更有活力。如：What’s up with Brian? He looks like he’s feeling his oats today.（布萊恩怎麼啦？今天看起來特別精神奕奕。）

Since grain is small, can you guess what 3⃣ “a grain of truth” means? It means a small amount of truth or insight in something that is otherwise false or meaningless. Ex: Is the story completely fake, or is there a grain of truth in it?
既然穀子很小，你能猜到a grain of truth「一顆真相」的意思嗎？指的是藏在看似不真實或無意義的事情之中的一絲真理或洞察。如：Is the story completely fake, or is there a grain of truth in it?（這個報導全是假的，還是裡面其實有一絲真相？）

Grain has also come to mean small, hard pieces of other substances, like salt. This usage can be seen in the expression, 4⃣ “take something with a grain of salt,” which means to view something with a degree of skepticism. Why? Because food is easier to swallow if it’s flavored with salt. Ex: John likes to exaggerate, so I take everything he says with a grain of salt.
grain 也有「細粒、顆粒」的意思，就像鹽巴，相關的用語：take something with a grain of salt指的是「對事物抱持半信半疑或保留態度」。怎麼說呢？因為食物加了鹽巴會比較有味道。如：John likes to exaggerate, so I take everything he says with a grain of salt.（約翰喜歡誇大，所以我對他的話都抱留保持態度。）
