As one of the communications masters at AppWorks, I have spent a few hours a week talking to founders about "go to market strategies" and marketing.
One of the interesting things that has struck me about these meetings is how the concept of marketing is focused on SEO and everything that is "digital."
I wanted to share with you something from the Silicon Valley past that demonstrates that some of the most successful startup apps in history didn't actually take a digital marketing approach. My gut -- and experience -- tells me that if you are looking for product market fit, and trying to get your answer into the hands of people who have a problem, it might be a good thing to pursue an offline strategy.
Here are four companies that did that:
1. DoorDash -- actually got their first customers by printing up a bunch of flyers and pasting them to street signs and buildings up and down Palo Alto's University Avenue. The $6 code they were offering incentivized people to download the app and try it.
2. Uber -- would it shock you to know that in the early days of Uber, "street teams" would camp out at the train stations and hand out flyers to people coming off the trains from their evening commute. They offered a much more personal and immediate service. It eventually caught on, especially in the Bay Area, which was notorious for being really hard to navigate outside of walking and taking the train.
3. Snapchat -- Evan Spiegel, the founder, would actually go to malls and show people how to use Snapchat by giving them on the spot tutorials. This is something you just can't replace. It's like looking for a car. You want to sit in it, drive it, learn how it works, and that personal touch makes it really hard for you to pass on the deal.
4. Tinder -- the two co-founders would spend hours walking around University of Southern California, literally hooking people up by showing them how to use the app. The immediacy of being able to find an eligible and good looking single who was interested in you, right there on your phone, was intoxicating. It took the search out of dating and showed you who was immediately available in the campus's massive complex.
So, I think the moral of the story here is that you don't really need to spend a lot of money on online marketing. When you are looking for product market fit, you really need to spend time with your potential customers. Early startup days are high touch, very little messaging.

It’s finally OPEN!! If you are planning a family getaway in Genting and don’t know how to entertain your kids or teens? Here is a new place called FORMULA FUN by Kyatchi.
So what’s up with this place?
Let me tell you a story 📖
One fine day on #Chor4, Formula Fun was visited by the curious MonolidGirl 👧 little did she know as she was on her way up to Genting in the cable car, she realised she forgot to bring her phone down from the phone holder in her car and so~ she had to burn her one-way ticket and... wait... let’s come back to the main purpose of the trip~ rewind ⏮ ▶️ The MonolidGirl 👧 got off the cable car station at Sky Avenue, made her way towards Ripley’s Adventureland at Level 4 (located on the same level as the cable car station). As she made her way to RA, she passed by the Alley and Subway, straight into the Adventureland and there she saw FORMULA FUN by Kyatchi (next to @infinityroom.genting)
She visited the Robot ride first, the robots are big, they could fit an average adult and older kids, there are smaller bots for kids too (she shamelessly sat on one 😅) And it’s nice taking photos with the bots and background lights if you strike a post or two 😉
Next stop 🛑🚏🏎 was the rides next door~

It’s the most simple looking ride but it was challenging 😂 knocked the sides a couple of times to learn~ There are fun rides for kids, however the Ferrari ride is for older kids and for her favourite ride (not sure what’s the name) which she thinks it’s for all ages and it’s good training for the brain 🧠 too!! Before she heads back, the battle of the siblings is a must! Hahahaha! Till next time... The End~

Dr. Sign is a mobile application created to tackle the low health access deaf patients get in healthcare settings. Its aim is mainly to provide better health access for deaf patients by improving the communication between deaf patients and healthcare professionals through the innovation of tools such as an interactive chat that uses real-time speech-to-text features and a platform to learn British Sign Language (BSL). This ideation helps deaf patients to have better access to health in utilizing a more user-friendly avenue, potentially raises awareness for healthcare professionals to understand the issue, and possibly equips both deaf patients and healthcare professionals with BSL.

In this hiking vlog I explore the beautiful English Countryside in North Wessex Downs AONB and discover a secret Stonehenge that nobody knows about!
In this hike I explore lots of historic landmarks found in the England. The first landmark I hiked to was Silbury Hill which it the llargest artificial prehistoric mound in Europe. Next I walked to West Kennet Long Barrow which is an ancient tomb dating back to 3650 BC. After this I hiked along the fields to West Kennet Avenue which is a site of large prehistoric stones said to be grave markers. Finally I did the long walk over stunning nature landscapes to reach a site very similar to Stonehenge called Farley Henge. Little is known about this hidden gem and it is a wonderful place to come and explore.

Today I went to NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown as a clueless white guy and got food and chatted with locals in the rare Chinese dialect of Fuzhounese. They were totally stunned!!! This is Part 2 of our Fuzhounese adventure in NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown of Sunset Park (8th Avenue).
It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions — both the waiters and the other patrons in Sunset Park were totally shocked! Then we walked around in the Chinese New Year parade and chatted with vendors and other people in Fuzhounese and Mandarin; their reactions were hilarious as well!
