Abstract
The talk stars by the exploration of integrated circuits in the era of IoT predicted by empirical laws that have been correctly predicting the trend. These laws include the Moore's law for exponential growth of integration scale, the Makimoto's wave for 10-year cycles of standardization and customization, and the Bell's law for the birth and death of computer classes. Then, based on a few examples of IoT applications, together with the predictions of ITRS, design challenges in the era of IoT will be reviewed. Among them, this talk will focus on energy and reliability challenges and address possible solutions. The key for energy reduction is supply and threshold voltage scaling. A practical scaling strategy will be explained. For a reliable system with soft error resilience, we have been developing a dependable-VLSI platform. A key concept of the platform will be explained followed by a demonstration of the robustness against soft-errors.
