#救救馬來貘 🇮🇩 🇲🇾
「我以為是一個小孩掉進水池裡...」在印尼蘇門答臘廖內省的北乾巴魯市 （Pekanbaru），當地居民在4月20日中午驚見一隻馬來貘受困在自家後方的水池裡。事件發生後引起當地居民圍觀，尤其馬來貘跌入水池發出巨大聲響的當下，讓人誤以為是有小孩發生意外，趕緊前來搜救。目前搜救小組已成功救出馬來貘，但暫時無從得知馬來貘從何而來、為何無端跌入水池。

但此事值得探討的關鍵也在於：馬來貘普遍生活在東南亞的熱帶雨林裡，但近年來，不論是印尼或是鄰國馬來西亞，都相繼發生馬來貘一再闖入「人類生活區域」，進而受傷甚至死亡的事件，這當中發生了什麼事？

據報導，廖內省自然資源保護中心接到居民通報後就即刻趕往現場。他們發現馬來貘跌入一個深度約1.7m、當時約有一半水量的水池裡。搜救過程中，除了水是一大阻礙，且在不能過度驚動馬來貘的情況下，搜救人員表示馬來貘的巨大體型也增加了搜救難度——一般而言，馬來貘的體長為1.8至2.5m之間，體重介於250公斤至320公斤之間，但最大個體甚至可以達到540公斤。

因此，相關人員一開始試著以最大劑量麻醉馬來貘，希望在其昏迷之後合力抬走，但效果不如人意。後來耗時約6個小時之後，人員才透過「放牧」的方式，成功讓馬來貘順利走進準備好的籠子裡帶走。這隻馬來貘事後被暫時安頓在當地一家保護機構接受治療，醫治受傷的頭和腳部。目前暫時無從得知馬來貘從何而來，但初步判定可能來自於從附近的一座森林公園。

一般而言，馬來貘分布在東南亞的熱帶森林裡，包括印尼、馬來西亞、緬甸和泰國等國，屬於中大型的哺乳動物。而隨著森林棲息地被大規模破壞——為種植油棕、或農業用地而開發森林，加上全球暖化等——不僅是馬來貘，包括猩猩、蘇門答臘虎等物種的數量也大幅降低。早在1986年，馬來貘已經被列為瀕危物種；而據估計，全球只剩下約2,500至3,000隻馬來貘，但實際上的數目可能更少。

於是在家園被剝奪的情況下，無處可去的馬來貘不時會闖入人類家園，幸運者如上所述，還能保住一條命，但不幸者可能就會衝上馬路，發生交通事故。據統計，印尼的鄰國馬來西亞，境內約有1,100至1,500隻馬來貘，在2006年到2017年之間就有92隻馬來貘死於公路意外。原因一來是馬來貘誤闖公路，二來也是因為駕駛者有時難以在黑夜裡分辨黑色的馬來貘。

除了森林過度開發，讓問題雪上加霜的人為因素也包括狩獵問題。近年來，狩獵馬來貘的人數有所增加，除了作為食物用途，也涉及非法交易。例如，印尼的狩獵者在非法狩獵馬來貘後，將其交易到當地的動物園裡；而在泰國，一頭年輕馬來貘的交易金額還可以達到5,000美元。在馬來西亞，也有狩獵者專門以獵捕馬來貘、收藏為樂。不論目的與用途為何，獵人們的狩獵行動都加速馬來貘的滅絕。

若要治本，關鍵之一也在於各國在發展的同時，對保育馬來貘的議題上盡了多少努力；各國政府也已陸續成立森林保育區，保護瀕臨絕種的動物。以馬來西亞為例，馬來西亞半島野生動物保護及國家公園局，在2002年制定了保護馬來貘的相關計劃。該局之後也與哥本哈根動物園合作，成立了馬來貘保護中心，除了庇護流離失所的馬來貘，同時也建立研究和繁殖馬來貘的計劃目標。而為了降低馬來貘的車禍事故，當局也在可能會有馬來貘出沒之地設立路牌，提醒駕駛者。

此外，印尼各專家也組成一個名為IUCN的小組，透過和當地政府和社區合作，致力馬來貘保育計劃，包括進行田野調查、發展管理計劃以及提升大眾對馬來貘的認知意識等。當然，相比起過去，各界也越來越認識馬來貘，甚至4月27日還是「世界馬來貘日」（World Tapir Day），旨在提升大眾對馬來貘的了解。然平心而論，在馬來貘抑或動物保護的議題上，不論是政府還是民間仍需要更多的努力。

由此延伸，隨著馬來貘的關注度有所提升，或許其名字的關係，可能讓人誤會「馬來貘是馬來西亞的國獸」。其實馬來西亞的國獸是「馬來亞虎」（Malayan Tiger），對馬來西亞人民而言，馬來亞虎象徵著果敢與毅力，它除了出現在國徽上，也時常作為各種標誌出現，例如當地國產車品牌普騰、馬來亞銀行等等。
.
而「貘」的形象流傳，在中國與日本也深受影響，像是詩人白居易的《貘屏贊》之中，有被後人認為是馬來貘形象的描繪；而日本從中國傳入的文化影響，也有所謂「食夢貘」的民俗怪談，貘會以長鼻吸食人類的惡夢。儘管未必和真正的貘有直接指涉，但傳說的演化多少也反映出對貘的認知想像。
