根據美國《陸軍時報》日前報導，美國特種作戰司令部（SOCOM）與美國陸戰隊已積極著手研發一款新型機槍，將一口氣取代現役的M240型7.62公厘口徑通用機槍，與部分單位的M2型12.7公厘口徑重機槍。這款暫時被稱為「輕量化中型機槍」（Lightweight Medium Machine Gun）的武器，將採用狩獵或特殊狙擊槍用的「0.338吋諾瑪麥格農子彈」（.338 Norma Magnum），其基本尺寸雖大於現役7.62公厘子彈（較12.7公厘口徑子彈小且輕得多），但由於裝藥更多，射程更遠，甚至能在與12.7公厘口徑子彈同樣射程內，具備同等級殺傷力，威力非常強大。
