【為什麼壞人有錢,好人沒有錢?】
Why are the Evil-Doers Rich, and Mr Good Guys Poor?

When I uploaded this video on my Youtube channel 4 years ago, a viewer left a comment asking,
"Teacher, sorry but I wish to ask, those villiians can earn bountiful wealth because of the incredible good fortune they accumulated in their past lives.
In Buddhism, there is this theory: our souls in this lifetime is the product of our cultivation from past lives. Thus, for this life, you will continue to cultivate the areas you did well in (virtuous affinities & good fortune) and the areas you fail in (negative affinities & retribution).
The final goal is to accomplish Great Perfection and eventually, attain Buddhahood.
But my question is, if those villians accumulated so much good fortune in their past lives, then the essence of their souls should have more goodness in them. Why the vast difference in this life? This is perplexing. @@ Sorry I wish to ask Teacher ...”

My simple reply at that time:
Hi, a Bodhisattva will experience confusion between his past and current lives. When man is born, his nature is chaotic. He becomes virtuous when he meets virtuous conditions, and turns vile, when he meets malevolent affinities.
The problem is a person who has cultivated good fortune may not be a person who adheres to the five precepts. Because they may not have cultivated wisdom, they are still very prone to their habitual tendencies and lack the meditative strength to avoid committing sins.
For example, Jackie Chan enjoys enormous wealth and fame. This got to do with his fondness for doing charity. But he still committed sexual misconduct due to his lack of restraint. Thus his son, Jaycee Chan, was a drug abuser and let the family down. Jackie Chan was universally condemned and this is one retribution of his sexual misconduct.
A person doing virtuous deeds does not mean he is not doing bad deeds on the other hand. If there is no repentance after a bad deed is done, he will end up with a Destiny of good and bad interweaved in it.
But no matter how malevolent a villain may be, when his virtuous affinity approaches, there will come a day when he is willing to lay down the butcher's knife to become a Buddha, i.e. repent and be absolved of his past sins.
Just like Buddha's disciple, Angulimala.

The magnificent stature of the Chung Tai Chan Monastery is a hard one to miss when passing through Puli Township, Nantou. Even its side profile mimics the outline of a praying monk. Its outward appearance appears stylish while still retaining the virtues and wisdom of Buddhism teachings and everyday life. Upon closer approach, one can feel its calming effects and find power deeply rooted in its tranquility.

💁🏻♂️ Mr Patrick commented:
Excuse me, Teacher, I would like to ask you. Those evil people can earn huge money this life, due to the incredible good fortune they amassed in their past lives. In Buddhism, it is said that our souls in this life inherit our cultivation from our past reincarnations.
The areas that you have cultivated well (positive affinities + good fortune) and the areas that you have not (negative affinities + negative karma) will follow you to this lifetime for you to continue your cultivation.
The eventual goal is reach the Great Perfection and then attain Buddhahood.
So my question is, if those evil people can accumulate so much good fortune, then intrinsically his soul should have more good in it.
Why do they end up deviating so far? This is perplexing. @@ And I would like to seek Teacher's advice.
👩🏻🏫 My reply:
When a Bodhisattva is reincarnated, He becomes ignorant of His past life.
Also, Man's nature at birth is muddled. When virtuous affinities arise, Man can become virtuous. When malevolent affinities arise, Man can become evil.
The thing is a person who have cultivated good fortune may not be a person who abide by the Five Precepts. He may not have cultivated his wisdom and retains many undesirable habits, so he lacks the meditative strength to restrain himself from doing wrong.
For example, Jackie Chan enjoys great wealth and fame, which is correlated to his love for philanthropy. However, he still committed sexual misdeeds, due to his inability to control his sexual urges and habitual lust. His only son, Jaycee Chan, unfortunately turns to be a drug addict for 8 years, a huge disappointment to many, and Jackie Chan got universally condemned again. Such is one retribution of sexual misconduct.
A person who likes doing good is not a virtuous man, if he also commits evil. When there is no repentance after evil is done, we will end up with a destiny that crosslinks good and evil.
However, no matter how evil a person is, when his virtuous conditions arise, there will still be a day when the butcher will lay down his knife and become a Buddha.
Just like Aṅgulimāla, who later became Buddha's disciple.
He was a serial killer, who wore the fingers of his 999 victims on a necklace. He was chasing Buddha to murder him, so that he can reach his goal of killing 1000 people. He wrongfully thought that would ascend him to Heaven.
Yet no matter how fast he ran, he could not catch up with Buddha, who seemingly was just walking slowly not that far away from him.
He yelled at Buddha to stop, and Buddha said, without turning his head:
"Angulimala! I have already stopped. It is you who have not stopped.”
My dear friend, have the Angulimala in you stopped?
Or are you relentlessly planting seeds of evil only to inflict misery onto yourself?

The year 2019 marks the 10th anniversary for Master Sheng Yen’s passing, the 30th anniversary for Dharma Drum Mountain, the 40th anniversary for Chan Meditation Center, and the 70th anniversary for Humanity Magazine. To remember Master Sheng Yen, DDM organized a series of events surrounding the theme of “Thus I Do.”
From DDM’s Family Day for Protecting the Spiritual Environment, designed to engage and inspire the public to practice Chan in daily life, to the International Conference on Buddhism and Social Science, as well as the Conference of Spiritual Environmentalism on the Regeneration of Agriculture in the Era of Climate Change, which aimed to combine Buddhist teachings and other specialized studies, Dharma Drum Mountain has shown its effort in promoting diversity and infusing new energy in Buddhist practice. The newly opened Yunlai Monastery Branch Center, the new venue of DDM Buddhist Centre Malaysia, and the inauguration of Chan Retreat Center in Croatia, established by Žarko Andričević, one of Master Sheng Yen’s Dharma heirs, also testified the devotion of the Master’s monastic and lay disciples in continuing his vows to advocate DDM’s Threefold Education and Protection of Spiritual Environment endeavors universally throughout the world.
Master Sheng Yen had completed his task of establishing Dharma Drum Mountain, while we are still striving to further its development. For 2020, let us all aspire to contribute to DDM's annual theme of the year—Nurture blessings, and you will be blessed—as an effort to realize a pure land on earth.
