熱水浴越沖越痕
靜香:「冬天到我喜歡用比較熱的水沖涼,身上的痕癢會暫時紓緩,但沖涼後又痕起來,怎麼辦?」
CheckCheckCin:冬天冷冰冰,沖個熱水浴的確很舒服,但熱水浴止痕只是一時之快,太熱的熱水會令皮膚表面失去脂質,皮膚會變得更為乾燥,人體正常體溫介乎攝氏36至37度,沖涼水溫以接近體溫的攝氏35至38度為佳,不宜高過攝氏42度,尤其浸浴的話更要注意,太高水溫會讓血壓上升,造成心臟負擔,水溫過高加上浸泡時間過長容易導致暈倒昏迷、心臟缺血缺氧等情況,所以浸浴時間以不多於20分鐘為佳。沖涼後宜立即抹乾,趁身體還濕潤時塗上潤膚乳來鎖住水分。很多人身體痕癢的原因為濕熱,適量進食清熱祛濕的食材,同時避免進食辛辣、海鮮、煙酒等動風發物,有助紓緩疜症狀。
地膚子白癬皮茶
功效:清熱化濕止痕,紓緩皮膚泛紅、發熱痕癢等症狀。
材料:地膚子10克、白癬皮10克�
做法:材料放入保溫瓶內,先以熱水沖洗一次,再注入熱水焗15分鐘至出味。�

Hot water bath can worsen itchy skin
“I like to bath in hotter water during winter as it helps relieve the itch on my body, but I’ll feel itchy again not long after. What can I do?”
CheckCheckCin: The weather is cold during winter. Taking a hot bath is definitely a nice experience, but you may want to think twice if you believe it can help stop the itch on your body. Using hot water can cause the skin to lose its sebum, and your skin will be even drier.
Since our body temperature is within 36 – 37 degree Celsius, it would be appropriate to bath in water within the range of 35 – 38 degree Celsius. Avoid going beyond 42 degree Celsius.
Be extremely mindful if you are using a bathtub, as water at a high temperature can increase blood pressure, which would in turn cause additional burden to the heart. If a person dips in the hot water for too long, he or she might feel dizzy and faint, or suffer from oxygen deficiency in the heart. Therefore, it is best not to spend more than 20 minutes in the bathtub.
Do wipe the body dry right after the shower, and apply moisturizer to lock in the moisture while it is still slightly wet. Many people experience itch on the body because of damp-heat. Consume an appropriate amount of ingredients that can eliminate dampness from the body. In order to better relieve the itch, avoid consuming hot and spicy food, seafood, as well as wind-stimulating items such as cigarettes and alcohols.
Belvedere fruit & dense-fruit dittany root bark tea
Effects: clears heat and dispels dampness, suitable for those with skin redness or itchiness
Ingredients: 10g belvedere fruit, 10g dense-fruit dittany root bark
Preparation: place all ingredients into thermos, rinse with hot water once. Then add in hot water again and steep for 15 minutes.

周小姐:「每逢秋冬我的四肢就會痕癢,忍不住不斷抓,嚴重時皮膚好像蛇皮一樣有小片狀,有時痕癢得難以入睡。」
CheckCheckCin:皮膚痕癢、皮膚乾燥粗糙有如魚鱗狀,觸摸時有棘手感覺,是中醫理論中「肌膚甲錯」的症狀,多見於血虛氣弱人士身上,例如血虛體質,伴隨症狀為面色偏白、口乾、心悸、容易頭暈、脫髮、指甲容易折斷、手足麻痹、大便偏硬等,血虛人士因氣血不足,體內血液未能濡養肌膚,引致皮膚乾燥、瘙癢,想改善症狀需要養血潤膚、滋陰生津,因為改善血液循環,痕癢便得以紓緩,可以適量食用紅棗、當歸、生地、熟地、北茋、黨參、黑豆、紅豆等食材。避免發物及喝酒、洗澡時水溫不宜太高,記得抹乾身上水份後塗抹一層潤膚乳,都有助紓緩痕癢症狀。
沙參玉竹防風茶
功效:滋陰養血、清心安神,紓緩血虛症狀。
材料:沙參12克、玉竹12克、防風9克
做法:材料洗淨。將材料放入鍋中,注入800毫升水,武火煮至水滾後轉文火煮20分鐘,倒入保溫瓶,反覆沖泡飲用,待水溫變暖後可加適量蜂蜜調味。
此茶可沖泡3至4次至味淡,建議一星期飲用2-3次,連續兩星期為一個療程。
備註:女士月經期間及孕婦不宜飲用。

Nourish the blood and moisten the skin to relieve itchy limbs
“My arms and legs itch quite often during the autumn and winter and I can’t help but to scratch them. Sometimes it might even peel like snakeskin. I can’t even sleep in peace.”
CheckCheckCin: Itchy and dry scale-like skin, even feeling ‘prickly’ when touched – this condition, according to the Chinese Medicine theories, is ‘ji fu jia cuo’, or squamous and dry skin in English. It often happens to individuals who are weak in the blood and qi, for instance, those with the blood-deficient body constitution. The other accompanying symptoms are – pale complexion, dry mouth, palpitation, dizziness, hair fall, fragile nails, limb numbness, as well as dry and hard stools.
The blood and qi deficiency will disrupt the circulation of fluid to the skin, causing the skin to feel dry and itchy. In order to improve the symptoms, we need to replenish the blood to hydrate the skin, as well as nourish the yin and bodily fluid. This will help improve blood circulation, and hence relieve the itch.
Consider eating red dates, angelica root, fresh Rehmannia glutinosa (‘sheng di’), processed Rehmannia glutinosa (‘shu di’), Astragalus root, Codonopsis root, black beans and red beans. Avoid eating foods that are stimulating and avoid alcohol; do not bathe using water at a high temperature. Remember to apply a layer of moisturizing lotion on the body to relieve the itch on the skin.
Glehnia root tea with polygonatum root and root of Fangfeng
Effects: Nourishes yin and blood, clears heart and calms mind, relieves blood deficiency symptoms.
Ingredients: 12g glehnia root, 12g polygonatum root, 9g root of Fangfeng
Preparation: Rinse all ingredients. Combine all ingredients with 800ml of water and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Place all ingredients into thermos. This tea can be re-brewed until flavour weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks for a treatment.

Ingredients: Honeysuckle, Wild Chrysanthemum, Caltrop
Effects: Clears heat and dispels dampness. Suitable for skin redness or itchiness.

Effects: Achieve rosy complexion, calms the mind, improves sleep, replenishes blood and nourishes the stomach.

從小就覺得菱角是很奇怪的食物,每年中秋才會見到它,兩端像牛角一樣尖,外殼很硬,到底要怎麼吃的呢?其實菱角是水生植物菱的種仁,屬澱粉質豐富的根莖類蔬果,由於味道有點像栗子,外國人稱它為Water Caltrop。從中醫角度來看,菱角性涼,有健脾益氣、清暑解熱、除煩止渴的功效。菱角不宜生吃,因為容易寄生薑片蟲,一般會放在加了鹽的水中煮熟食用,菱角中間凸起的是菱角最柔軟的部位,可以用牙將中間的殼咬掉,用手指從菱角兩端將菱角肉往中間的洞口擠壓,就能把菱角肉擠出。中秋節吃燒烤的話,不妨吃點菱角來中和一下熱氣。
菱角 — 性涼,有健脾益氣、清暑解熱、除煩止渴的功效,適合口渴心煩、酒後煩渴、脾胃氣虛、慢性腹瀉便溏人士食用,亦有抗癌功效。惟菱角性涼,脾胃虛寒者勿食為妥。

Learn about Horn Chestnut
I always found horn chestnut to be a little bizarre. Horn chestnut, which has a pair of sharp bull-like horns and a hard outer shell, seems to appear only during mid-autumn. How do we eat it?
Horn chestnut is a type of aquatic plant that falls under the genus of Trapa; a leguminous plant rich in starch. Since its taste is similar to chestnut, foreigners also called it water caltrop. From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, horn chestnut is cool in nature, can strengthen the spleen and improve the qi, clear summer heat, relieve anxiety, and has thirst-quenching properties.
Horn chestnut should not be eaten raw, as it may carry Fasciolopsis buski, a type of parasitic fluke. It is suitable for consumption once boiled in saltwater. The soft protruding part in the middle is the softest spot of the horn chestnut. We can tear it open with our teeth, and use our fingers to press in between to squeeze the flesh out. When having barbecue sessions, try eating some horn chestnut to clear off the barbecue heat.
Horn chestnut – cool in nature, can strengthen the spleen and improve the qi, clear summer heat, relieve anxiety, and has thirst-quenching properties. It is suitable for individuals who feel thirsty and frustrated, especially those who have had a few drinks; also good for people with qi deficiency in the spleen and stomach, and individuals with chronic diarrhea and loose stools problems. Horn chestnut also has anti-cancer properties. Since it is cool in nature, individuals with asthenic cold in the spleen and stomach should avoid eating.
