55年前，好美的基隆車站！可惜在拍下這張照片隔年（1966年）就被拆了。

這天下午，美國二十世紀福斯公司在基隆港碼頭正式開拍電影《聖保羅砲艇》（The Sand Pebbles），當時的基隆市可說是萬人空巷，民眾聚集在堤邊觀看電影的拍攝，停放在基隆車站前方的1927年式老爺車是拍片用的道具。
畫面中的第三代基隆車站啟用於1908年10月30日，為英式磚造建築，具有一座鐘塔，與同時期興建的新竹車站（德式，1913年啟用）與台中車站（英式，1917年啟用）同為文藝復興式建築，可惜在1966年這部電影殺青後沒多久即遭到改建，並沒有像新竹車站和台中車站一樣被保留下來。
1967年1月23日，耗資新台幣800萬元的基隆車站改建工程完工，將已有近半世紀歷史的磚造站體改建為鋼筋混凝土構造；第四代基隆車站外觀為平面式站體，分為車站本身和月台兩部分，當時有部份月台未被改建而得以保留，但仍在2009年遭到拆除。
2015年6月29日，第五代基隆車站通車啟用，站體採半地下化模式，分為南、北兩出口。
【關於 聖保羅砲艇】
1966年發行的美國電影《聖保羅砲艇》（The Sand Pebbles）改編自李察麥金納（Richard McKenna）的同名小說，勞勃懷斯（Robert Wise）執導，史提夫麥昆（Steve McQueen）、李察艾登堡祿（Richard Attenborough）、甘蒂絲柏根（Candice Bergen）主演，另外，香港影星秦沛（當年20歲）與台灣童星巴戈（當年11歲）也有參與演出。
故事描述1920年代美國淺水砲艇「聖保羅號」（USS San Pablo）在中國所發生的故事，由於當時中國大陸尚未改革開放，外國人不被允許入境拍片，因此全片在台灣的基隆、淡水河、艋舺龍山寺等地取景拍攝。此片獲得1967年的第39屆奧斯卡金像獎8項提名（包括最佳影片、最佳男主角、最佳男配角、最佳攝影等），不過皆未得獎。
電影背景設定為湖南長沙，故事從1926年說起，當時從廣州出發、打著反對西方帝國主義旗號、由蘇聯支助與訓練的國民革命軍勢如破竹，長江流域各都市的工人與學生都發動大規模的反西方示威遊行準備迎接國民革命軍，國民革命軍不但攻擊西方人並掠奪產業，甚至意圖收回租界，於是在中國獲得利益的列強包括英、美、法、日則大為緊張，紛紛抽調軍隊與軍艦來到中國應變，而在長江上游的西方僑民則紛紛往上海撤退。
孰料當1927年4月國民革命軍即將進入上海前夕，一向被視為「紅色將軍」的總司令蔣介石突然倒向西方陣營，利用青幫勢力屠殺上海工人糾察隊，這不但造成革命軍陣營的寧漢分裂，還讓蔣介石與英美勢力及江浙財閥掛勾，開創了蔣稱霸中國政壇22年的時代。
但這一段糾葛的歷史在1960年代高唱「反共抗俄」的台灣被視為一大禁忌，不僅因為蔣介石以世界反共領袖自居，還因為他在台灣的安危尚須依賴美國人的保護，所以不願再突顯這段紅色將軍反美反帝的歷史，而使得在台灣拍攝的《聖保羅砲艇》竟在台灣遭到禁演的命運，直到1984年才獲准在台上映，但內容仍遭大幅修剪。
I think the hubby was worried if I could make it, seeing how I was going to lug three bags - including his navy backpack which contained our lunch, drinks, ponchos, caps, insect repellant, umbrella, sunblock, extra clothes etc - along with three excited and lively kids who can at times ignore every word I say. Haha. So I sent him photos along the way just to let him know we are doing fine and enjoying most of our day.
When we were on Kusu Island, I asked the kids to take a photo with the marble tortoise statues and sent it to him, to which he replied "Hey, tell the kids this is the same tortoise Papa sat on when I was young!". Wow. Haha. I guess it's the same for both of us - we haven't been here for decades already! #howtimeflies
I almost forgot how tranquil the island can be and even though we spent close to three hours of free and easy time here, we still wished we could stay on for more. Let's see. What did we do? We prayed at the temple, we watched tortoises climbing in and out of the pond, we threw pebbles into the sea, we played in the sand, the boy scaled over 150 stairs with me to get to the hilltop and amazingly didn't complain at all, we saw thousands of hermit crabs, the girls tried to catch fish with a plastic bag and we basically just took time to unwind, be free of gadgets and just enjoy life as it is.
Of course, there were still bickers along the way and well, they definitely didn't obey every word I said. But still, it was all good and we left feeling thankful, happy and exhausted but in a good way. Well, the ice cream we bought at the provison shop at Marina South Pier did wonders to rejuvenate everyone and made them think I'm the best Mama ever too. Lol.
I was asking the kids on the way home if they enjoyed themselves and the answer was an unanimous "Yes!". So yup, today is a good day and for the first time in a long time, my kids are in bed by 10pm. Haha. What should I do now?
