經常有人問我：「我孩子 X 歲，這本書適合他閱讀嗎？」或者「這本書是適合甚麼年級的孩子閱讀呢？」
其實以「歲數」「年級」來衡量適合與否，很難說得準，畢竟同一年紀同一年級的孩子，閱讀能力也會存在很大的距離。不過我有時也只依介紹的建議閱讀年紀來選就算，資料於不同的網站（例如 Amazon、goodreads）也可以輕易找到。或者到圖書館借一本來看看，就更清楚了。
如果你的孩子有閱讀 levelled readers 的習慣，譬如 Raz-Kids（即 Reading A-Z）或其他分層閱讀系統，你大概知道孩子的 reading level，以及可以應付到那個 Lexile levels 的閱讀材料。

譬如正仔近日閱讀 Reading A-Z Level W 的分層讀物，近 10 次 8 次的 comprehension quiz 成績不錯，應付到 W 階段的書，從正仔近日閱讀的 levelled readers 資料顯示（圖一、二），level W 的 Lexile level 大約 990-1000L，而圖三是 The Unwanteds 的資料，880L，圖四是 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 的資料，同樣都是 880L，Guided Reading Level 屬於 V 級，難度與 The Unwanteds 相約，因此正仔至少有 990L - 1000L 的閱讀能力，上述兩書他就能夠應付自如了。
其實在 Google 搜尋 XXX’s Lexile level 已經輕易找到相關資料，有些學校圖書館（正仔舊校如是）甚至把 Lexile levels 貼在圖書封面上，其實找到各書的 Lexile levels 不難，困難就在於要準確地找出孩子的 reading level。
