小人物上籃第218（上），桃園的理化邱老師分享了許多學生籃球的秘辛與價值，國中籃球聯賽進行過程中，有時候會有高中教練在旁邊recruit，我們就用幾個英文單字舉例一篇中英文夾雜的短文來解釋：
公司進來好多newrecruit，他們都是rookie/newbie/greenhorn，為了讓他們快速適應瞭解公司背景文化，通常都會參加orientation，這些都是公司招募常見的英文單字。

My dad is a total newbie to smartphones. I have to explain everything all over to him.

【「菜鳥」英文怎麼講？】
老友問，「『菜鳥』應該翻 rookie 嗎？都是負面的意思嗎？」
是這樣：
Rookie /r'ʊki/ 基本的意思是「專業球員在聯盟的第一年」。說球員，不負面，倒是非常的中性，只指第一年。有些 rookie 其實打得很精彩，可能已經是聯盟最好的一個球員。例句：
It’s his rookie year.
(今年是他菜鳥年。)
Even though he’s a rookie, the team expects a lot from him.
(雖然他是菜鳥，球隊對他期望很大。)

不過，若在打球之外的語境中, rookie 是很負面的，的確是在形容這個人能力差、什麼都不會、很遜，所以常常用來批評或者嘲笑人。
What a rookie. She can’t even use the most basic software!
(這麼爛的新手，連最基本的軟體都不會！)
Our new boss is a total rookie. He has no idea what’s going on.
(新老闆爛透了。他什麼都不懂。)
根據我的語感，這樣用的 rookie 比中文的「菜鳥」負面一些。需要沒那麼負面的說法，可以繼續看下面的討論……

也有人問，「職場上的新生／新手，都可以說 freshman 嗎？」
不行！英文裡頭，freshman /fr'ɛʃmən/ 通常限於高中一年級或大學一年級的人，是不能用來形容公司裡的新職員。公司的新生／新手，在英文裡會用相當平淡的說法：
He’s new here.
He’s the new guy.
She’s new.
We’ve got a couple of newcomers I’d like you to meet.
(我們新進了一些職員，我給你介紹一下.)

再教一個可愛又流行的說法，就是 newbie /'nu bi/. 這也是「新手」的意思，但常常用來說嗜好，像學語言，藝術社團。
例如：
In our English conversation club, some of the newbies were too nervous to say anything!
(有些剛加入我們英文會話社團的人，會緊張到半句話都說不出來！)
在別的情況下，喜歡「卡哇依」語氣的人可能會用 newbie 來代替一般傳統樸素的字 newcomer.
