Very saddened to learn that my old Catholic High School principal, Brother Joseph Dufresse Chang, passed away yesterday afternoon.

Brother Joseph left a deep impression on all his students. We remember him fondly, and kept in touch long after we graduated. He was strict with us, but compassionate and nurturing, and cared for us all deeply.

His ambition for his students was that we would be well-rounded, and develop good character and values through our studies and co-curricular activities. He was not just our principal, but also our mentor and friend. Educators like Brother Joseph played a vital role in moulding us to be the people we are today.

My deepest condolences to his family. He will be missed by many. – LHL

上週六就在母親節前夕，AIT所支持的NGO - 台灣女子運動體育協會 (TWSA) 特別南下來到高雄總圖和大家見面，舉辦了【#看見運動中的性別】第二場的教育座談活動。

活動中除主辦單位TWSA理事長劉柏君，更邀請到體壇知名媒體人戚海倫、王雲慶以及滑冰協會秘書長吳倫閑來分享女性參加國際體育組織的現況與展望，共有超過40位的南部朋友們出席。AIT高雄分處的文化新聞組組長蔡南亭也特別到場表達支持，並感謝兩位AIT的好朋友劉柏君及曾郁嫻能共同策畫這場位女性發聲的討論會。

與會貴賓還包括立委劉世芳、高雄市市議員郭建盟、高市運發局局長侯尊堯, 以及高市女權促進會理事長許乃丹及蔣琬斯也到場表達支持，並承諾繼續爭取建設國內體育場所更多友善女性運動員及裁判等硬體措施。藉由短短兩小時的分享與觀眾提問，讓更多南台灣朋友們開始重視體育中的性別平等議題。讓我們一起支持台灣女性在國際運動組織中, 能夠扮演有影響力的角色!! #GenderEqualityinSports

👭⚾ “Doing sports isn’t about getting gold medals. It’s about becoming a better person.” – Liu Po-chun, first woman in Taiwan to become a major league baseball umpire, and State Department Sports Mentor.

Last Saturday AIT-supported Taiwan Women Sports Association (TWSA) held its second Gender Equality in Sports workshop at the Kaohsiung Main Library. Apart from TWSA Director Liu Bo Chun, media figures Chi Hailun and Richard Wang, as well as Chinese Taipei Skating Union Secretary-General May Wu shared the current state and prospects for women participating in sports on the international stage. More than 40 people from southern Taiwan attended this event. AIT/K Public Affairs Officer Julius Tsai provided welcome remarks to support the event and thank the two good friends of AIT and State Department Sports Mentors Liu Bo Jun and Tzeng Yu-hsien for organizing this workshop for the public.

Many distinguished guests were also in attendance, including Legislator Liu Shyh-Fang, Kaohsiung City Councilor Kuo Chien-Meng, Kaohsiung Sports Development Bureau Director Hou Tsun-Yao, and Kaohsiung Association for the Promotion of Women's Right Director Hsu Nai-dan and Chiang Wan-Ssu. Those present promised to keep fighting for more female-friendly sports facilities in Taiwan. This two-hour seminar allowed people in southern Taiwan to have a chance to understand the importance of gender equality in sports. Everyone needs mentors. Whether you're Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Barack Obama, or Jack Ma, there are always people out there ahead of you in life, with more wisdom and life experience. More importantly, these mentors embody some aspect of your future self and can help illuminate the pathway to get there.

This is particularly important in the realm of VC and startups where change is the only constant. Fred Wilson of NYC-based Union Square Ventures recounts the pivotal role that mentors have served in his career development in a recent newsletter.

I had two mentors early in my career; Milton Pappas and Bliss McCrum. They hired me as an associate at their venture capital firm, Euclid Partners, when I was 25 years old and between years at Wharton where I was getting an MBA. I worked for them for ten years and learned pretty much everything I know about venture capital from them. Bliss passed away a few years ago. Milton is still with us thankfully.

Of course, I learned so much about business from them. But the thing about great mentors is that they don’t stop with business. When I told Milton that Joanne and I were getting married, he dropped what he was working on in that moment, called across the street to his high touch travel agent, and we walked over there and he got us going on a first-class honeymoon. That was such a strong move and we learned a lot about traveling in style from that trip.

Bliss taught me how to chart stocks (technical analysis). We had no use for charting in the VC business, but that didn’t matter to Bliss. He liked to do it and taught me to do it with him. I don’t use that skill, but whenever I see a technical stock chart, I think of Bliss.

The thing about mentors is you can’t really ask someone to mentor you. It kind of happens organically. Someone takes you under their wing. They see something in you and want to bring it out, develop it. That’s how the best mentor/mentee relationships happen. And they are so great.
