Recently I found a picture that my favorite drummer
Antonio Sanchez and his band "Migration" touring in Taipei in 2017. And few years ago I've seen his DVD and felt so inspired from these words. I decided to translate it into Chinese to share with other Chinese drummers.
There's maybe little mistakes because English is not my mother language.
---------------------------------
Some wise words from my all-times favorite drummer Antonio Sanchez from his DVD - "Master Series".
And the last things I wanna said, hmm, has a lot to do with attitude to work with music and musicianships. Hmm, When I was growing up, I was always dreaming of playing in a nice, tall, the biggest stadium and the biggest band with the greatest musicians in this world. And that’s great except that we all have to start somewhere. And I, all of a sudden, I was playing in a little bar, or small pub, or some restaurant, or a wedding where nobody was paying an attention. And I really felt depressed and I felt violated. And for example, I’ve been played for a wedding gig, and I would be playing “La Marcaena” for a hundred times , and I would be like “What am I doing here ?”, “Get me out of here, shoot me, this is not for me, I’m so much better than this !”
And I was not putting my heart into it at all. When the next day, I would play in some small bar, I was playing maybe swing or something that I really like, but nobody was paying an attention. Everybody was looking at the screen, the baseball game. And I would be like “Well, nobody is paying an attention, then I just gonna playing practice whatever I was working on yesterday.” And I was NOT in the moment, I was not listening to what the other guys were playing. And maybe the other guys were listening to me.
So, when I luckily started getting better and better opportunities music-wise, and the situations start getting a little more the manling. I realized that I did not have the concentration I took for me to be able to deal with some of the situations. Uh, for example when I started to play with Niels Pedersen in the late 90s, it was a very tense gig , it was just a trio, and every night I would end would headache , because I was not used to have a lot of concentration and focusing that much, for that amount of time.
I realize that I’ve wasted a lot of time not being into the music not putting my heart into it. Because, I mean I really feel like if a, you have two arms, two legs, and you are able to play , you are lucky already. And I think if you are playing in some small restaurant, or wedding, or whatever. You treat that situation like the best gig in the world in the most beautiful opera house or the biggest stadium, and you treat you felt the musicians like the greatest musicians you could play with. I think you are on the right path. You put your heart into it, and you give the music and musicians the respect they deserved. Then I can assure you really good things are gonna happen to you. So that’s it for me, thank you so much for coming, hope see you next time.
English version: https://youtu.be/V6EvS4u9Fas It's the same conversation, except in Japanese. We haven't added subtitles so you can test your Japanes...

English after Mandarin
Philippe Daverio, an Italian art critic, says real art includes interpretations from different perspectives and should be ambiguous or unpredictable. I think Havana, as a true city of art, genuinely reflects that unpredictability.
My first impression of Cuba came from the Havana airport with that strong socialistic flavor. The angular exterior of the terminal looks exactly like one of those Transformer robots who might spring to life and battle at any second. This coincides with the concept of neo-futurism buildings which stresses the link between buildings and their surroundings. A great example is the angular toad-like Guangzhou Opera House. All that imagination accords with the so-called ambiguity of art.
Inside the terminal is the red immigration cubicles with that yellow tint, which gives a sense of incongruity combining passion with seemingly cold communism. That reminds me of the Cuban guy next to me on the plane who was humming songs all the time. Music can also be found on the boarding gate shuttle as well as the taxi I rode to downtown Havana. I was perplexed.
I asked the cab driver where he learned his English. He replied that English was one of the foreign language options in school, but English was not considered important. He then started to talked about how Obama helped boost Cuba’s economy with the loosened US-Cuban tension. It was unfortunate since Trump swore in and everything had been beaten down including the travel and real estate industries. I could still spot the change from young people’s fashionable outfits. It felt like Cuba was not the old Cuba that I learned from the travel guide. Everything about Cuba was yet to be explored.
By all means, Havana is no heaven for English speakers. From the moment I decided to find a casa/guest house on my own, my puny Spanish vocabulary was forced to work hard. (Yeah, I only know about a couple of hundred words. Shame on me!) The good thing is that I downloaded Spanish on my Google Translate in advance. Plus I hired a private tutor to learn Spanish phonics. I somehow managed to communicate with the locals. Sometimes, I doubted how I was going to open up this mysterious nation with my lousy Spanish.
The first thing I did after I checked into a casa was to follow my routine as a traveler and find a supermarket. Who would have known that this idea completely did not work here. In some residential areas of Old Havana, shop signs simply do not exist. This probably means most people in the community know each other, and thus are aware of where to go to find services they need without shop signs. That translated into my predicament as I tried to find some bottled water in the neighborhood. I literally asked for directions with my broken Spanish, Donde esta el agua? Following three kind passersby’s help in three different directions, I found a nice guy who took me to an inconspicuous window where I finally obtained two very precious bottles of water, which took me 30 minutes for this entire water-getting process.
En route to finding water, I saw a bakery producing only toast and rolls in batch, a shop selling only cigarettes and liquors, a restaurant with simple tables and chairs, and a barbershop that you can see it all at a glance. Everything here ran basically without the packaging of capitalistic shop signs. Because of my ignorance of Cuba, I started to shift my attention to the sounds made between the mottled streets and faded buildings. Deep frying noises from a pan, music from the radio, a rooster’s crowing, pounding bass from a car stereo, hola from a passerby, smackers from a husband to his wife, a chihuahua’s barking, and someone talking on a public phone—I was walking in the middle of a small street listening to the heart beats of Old Havana. Where I was standing is surely not the tourist-flooded Obispo pedestrian zone. Regardless, my perception about what a city ought to be was totally overthrown by the things I experienced initially.
My first impression about Cuba was novel yet hard to understand with the common sense. I felt I needed to let go of my expectations for the country. Perhaps, that way I could grasp a touch of the unpredictable art that only belongs to Cuba.

VIET/ENGLISH

I have this habit when I have free time I usually go in and read all the comments of fans on facebook and youtube. Much of what I read makes me feel so good and I also sometimes tear up. Additionally I read a lot of honest feedback that I take seriously to become more successful. Although I can’t always reply to everyone because Im only 1 person, I want you all to know that I appreciate your support so much.
Im surprised to know that this year Ive had so many opportunities to perform all over the world. Its such a pleasure to know that my musical journey in Vietnam has caught the eye of Vietnamese overseas and likewise foreigners living and working in Vietnam. Because of my bilingual song covers, I’ve been invited to speak on international TV about these covers and about language in general. Most recently, I was so proud when the owner of a nail salon in the US told me she regularly puts my music videos on the TV for her guests to watch and everyone loves them and requests them when they come to get their nails done. Im so blessed to see my musical journey have such an honest and real impact on all of my listeners, no big publicity stunts, no major PR plan, no frills, just real love, real views and real support! Songs like Không Còn Mùa Thu, Đêm Đông, Sầu Đông, Sài Gòn Đẹp Lắm, Hạ Trắng, Một Cõi Đi Về, Thương Ca tiếng Việt... have made a real emotional impact and connection with my viewers all over the world and have helped break down language and cultural barriers.
And my most recent story is when my Mom went back to eat her second bowl of Phở at the restaurant I took her last time. In this area, a few people where listening to Autumns Love, (Mùa Thu Cho Em https://youtu.be/pYnmZCJ9-5M ) My Mom was so excited and said “THAT’S MY SON. So many people looked at her and smiled. My most recent trip home, My Mom asked “who are you comparably famous to in the US?” I just smiled and said “Just be proud that I’ve done things that have made Vietnamese people really respect and love me all over the world.”

Hello, This is Ashley
At the previous episode, I had my dinner in this restaurant
The cheese noodle & mixed kimbap tasted good.
I was so full after dinner, but I still wanna to try those street food.
So let’s have a look!
First, I tried this rice juice. It taste good, and it’s just so sweet.
While having a walk, I found that lovely doll. It’s so cute, looks like a friend of mine!
the outer-package is so attractive too
Actually, this booth sold the strawberry sticky rice cake. It was similar to the strawberry daifuku I ate in Japan.
So I can’t help buying 1 cake to try. I was really too full and I cannot buy 1 package anymore even though those packages look beautiful.
Walking around, I saw some fried dumpling.
I ate dumplings in restaurant already. But these fried dumpling seems so big. So finally we bought 1 package.
Finally, we brough this pineapple. It’s good for digestion.
And we back to hotel.
next day, before we check out this hotel, we had the breakfast.
I like this pantry, the focus of this hotel.
it’s tiny in size, buy complete in detail
this is my breakfast
this strawberry jam is so yummy
there also is a koko krunch
It has been in HK as well. But it seems to be better .
Maybe because I was facing the street view and listening to the classical music
, while having the breakfast.
That’s what I enjoy under such circumstance.
we just spent 1 day in Myeong Dong, then we visited other places.
if you want to know where we went afterwards, kindly keep your eyes on the following epsiodes of Seoul-Cheongju travel.
See you next time!
