【油管教會我的三件事】(English writing below)
The 3 Lessons Youtube Taught Me
🎉 感謝三百位天才！🎉 😁
我的頻道，在2019年12月29日大約早上十點半，達到300位訂閱。
我在今年六月做了一個極端的決定， 就是我油管頻道要每星期更新。
極端因為我每天時間都已不夠用。
但我有一個壞習慣。
一旦決定要做的事情，我會如閃電俠般地衝刺，以推土機的力量把所有的障礙都剷平。
我慶幸自己在台灣找到一位可靠的剪輯師幫忙。
如果要一手包辦，要嘛我就頭髮全部發白或英年早逝，看哪個先到。
我的頻道在2019年三月達到一百位訂閱。當時，裡頭只有過去兩年隨性般地上傳的七支影片。
每星期更新影片，在六月的最後一個星期開始。從六月到十二月，因為工作繁忙，我只錯過一週的更新。
每週更新了25支影片後，我從油管學會了三件事：
一、舊的黃金依然是黃金
是真的，單憑一支「愛瘋」也可以成立一個油管頻道。
目前在我頻道的影片，是我在2016年到2017年做的臉書直播，用蘋果手機6和6S 的前置相機拍攝。
以前我每星期做直播，累積了很多影片，只是畫質就有點「另類」了。
我曾想過用一台好相機，在一個漂亮的場景，重拍那六十多場直播，讓影片看起來更專業。
可是⋯⋯想到頭髮花白之事⋯
我每星期上傳影片，漸漸地，在六個月的時間內，流量往上爬，新的觀眾也因為油管的推薦而看到我的影片。
我的油管影片都有超過一百的流量。
有一支解析金蟾的影片有過7800的觀看率，131個讚：

目前為止，沒有人向我投訴畫質不好。我想影片內容，夾麥的收音清晰和後製特效有幫助。
很多時候，這些直播是我見了客人或收到讀者來訊提問，靈感泉源湧現時而隨想隨拍的。所以你會看到我影片的背景往往都不一樣。
如果我重拍影片，是，我可能會說得更好，但應該很難模仿當時的那股激情。
一句話：時機對的時後，不要嘰嘰歪歪，往前衝就對了。

二、不完美也是完美的（有時）
我很執著完美。
當2019年的我看到年輕時的我在直播劈哩啪啦講一堆時，我會想⋯⋯咦，我怎麼那麼說呀⋯⋯天啊，我的臉怎麼那樣啊⋯⋯
那支金蟾的影片把我這大餅臉「完美」地呈現出來，也帶來最高的觀看率。過去一年，它也帶來很多來自新馬澳台和中國的詢問。
在我緊張著要開臉書直播談手淫時，我竟然忘了把夾麥插入手機，收音極差。我那時在星巴克，人來人往，攪拌機也正在「熱舞」。直播到一半，我緊張到忘了自己要說什麼。
我半點都不喜歡那影片，但心想，不管了，就放上去吧！那時是九月，頻道不到兩百訂閱，我心想反正沒什麼人看我影片。
結果，一位男士觀看後，因一片「熱愛」而把我影片放在男性論壇上。
二十四小時內，影片觀看率直破一千大關，也因此讓我的訂閱跨過兩百這門檻。
真的是不可思議，我竟然因為一支手淫危害財運的影片而在兩個男性論壇「爆紅」。兩個！
但我想我父母應該不會為我這「成就」而驕傲。😂
我也收到好些男性酸民因被我影片激怒而發來的留言。幸好，也有更多的男士以親身經歷而理智地支持我的說法。
在報父母恩咒的影片下方，有兩個留言給了我很大的動力：
「嗨，季謙小姐，請上傳更多影片。」
「感恩感激你循循善誘，教導我們如何通過佛法唸經、盡孝道，報答父母養育之恩。」
金玉良言：一切都是最美好的安排。

三、焦點不在我
觀眾選擇自己想看的內容。有時，「網紅」會因為高互動率按讚率等而自滿。
但對我而言，我上傳越多影片，越覺得這些不是在為我自己做。
除了定期更新，我並沒有什麼油管策略。
有時，我也想不出什麼搶眼的標題。我讓我的剪輯師覺得縮圖要怎麼做。我沒有什麼必勝的格式來呈現我的影片，更沒有什麼相似的頻道供我參考。
我把我的經驗和與客人的交流說出來。
這些影片都是我的迷你版，在網路上授課分享。

I hit 300 subscribers on 29 December 2019, around 1030am.
One radical decision I made in June 2019 was to start weekly upload to my Youtube channel.
Radical because I was already running on a very tight time schedule every day.
But I have a bad habit.
Once my mind is set on something, I charge like the Flash, bulldozing all obstacles to make things work.
I am lucky that I found a reliable video editor in Taiwan.
If I do everything myself, my hair will turn full white or I will die young, whichever comes faster.
My channel hit 100 subscribers in March 2019, with 7 videos uploaded sporadically over a span of 2 years.
The weekly upload commenced on the last week of June. From June till now, I have only missed one week of upload due to heavy workload in December.
25 weekly videos later, these are the 3 lessons Youtube have taught me:
1) OLD CAN BE GOLD
It’s true. You can start a Youtube channel with merely an Iphone.
Currently, the videos on my channel are my FB Lives from 2016-2017, filmed with the front camera of Iphone6 and 6S.
I used to do weekly Lives back then and chalked up many videos. The resolution is funky.
I toyed with the idea of remaking all the 60 over videos, you know, with a really nice DSLR camera and in a pretty setting, so that it can look more professional.
But…the thought of my hair turning white…
So I uploaded the videos and gradually over 6 months, the views stacked up and new audience started finding me through Youtube recommendations.
All my Youtube videos has over 100 views.

No one has yet to complain of the wacky resolution. I think the content, my clear audio from a lavalier mic and the editing effects make up for it.
Most of the time, those Lives were done on the fly, after getting all fired up from a client consultation or receiving questions from my readers, so you see all these different backgrounds in my videos.
If I have to remake the videos, yes I may speak better, but I doubt I can mimic the same in-the-moment passion.
✅ When the time is right, stop fretting about the small stuff and just charge ahead.

2) IMPERFECTION IS PERFECT (sometimes)
I am anal about being as perfect as I can.
When the 2019 me watched the younger me blabbing away in the Lives, I will be like, eeee…why did I talk like that, yucks, why did my face look like that…
That golden toad video showcased my big pancake face in its full glory…and it grossed the highest views. It also brought me a ton of inquiries from Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Macau and China over the last one year.
In all my anxiety to talk about masturbation on a FB Livestream for the first time, I freaking broccoli forgot to plug in my lavalier mic. The audio was bad. I was at a Starbucks cafe. People were walking left right up down center. The blenders were on rock and roll. I forgot what I wanted to say halfway.
I didn’t like the video a single bit. But never mind, just upload. My channel had less than 200 subs at that time in September. Who cares to watch my video anyway…
Then some guy watched it and “liked” it so much that he embedded my video to a men’s forum.
Within 24 hours, the views rocketed to over 1000 and that was how I hit the 200 sub count.
Holy asparagus, I became “famous” for a video of me sprouting about Masturbation VS Wealth Luck. In TWO men’s forums.
I somehow doubt my parents will be proud of this "achievement" of mine though. 😂
There were hate comments from men who got very agitated with what I said in the video. #chillbro Thankfully, there were more rational men who supported my viewpoint with their personal experiences.
In the video on a Buddhist mantra, there were two comments that motivated me greatly:
“Hi Ms Ji Qian, please do upload more videos.”
“Thank you for your patient guidance to teach us how to be filial and repay our parents for raising us up, through the Dharma and sutra recitation.”
✅ Everything happens for a good reason. It is up to me to make it serve my interest.

3) IT’S NOT ABOUT ME
People choose the content they want to watch. Sometimes "influencers" get carried away when they see their engagement shoot up.
But for me, the more videos I upload, the more I feel I am not doing it for myself.
Apart from consistent uploads, I do not have any strategy for Youtube.
I sometimes struggle to think of eye-catching titles. I let my video editor decides how he wants to do the thumbnails. I have no winning format to present my videos. There is no other similar Youtube channel for me to refer to.
I just speak what I know from first-hand experience and client interactions.
All these videos are my different mini-me, teaching and sharing online.
If you find it useful and subscribe to my channel, it isn’t me that is lucky.
It is YOU. Because you recognise that this knowledge can improve the quality of your life.
Life is a turbulence of emotions and events and it can often feel that we are not in control.
When you are able to steer your life better with this new knowledge in hand, I'm very sure that 2020 will be happy and rewarding for you and your family.

【加減乘除的人生】
I have been very broke and very broken before.
(60 cents in bank, hello!)
In those dreadful days of brokenness, I spent countless long nights binge watching Youtube and blog surfing. From midnight all the way to dawn.
I lamented at how many other people are more successful, eloquent, smarter and better-looking than me.
Influencers, bloggers, content creators, Youtubers...
The more I watched and read, the more broken and stupid I felt.
My failed businesses have knocked the wind out of me and I lost the confidence to be a Feng Shui practitioner, despite Shifu and my husband egging me on.
I assumed I would suck at it, just like how I failed at everything else.
I hid for a very long long time in my eggshell, refusing to tell people that I know Metaphysics or the Dharma to help them with their life problems.
I can't even help myself. How am I qualified to help them?
Fast forward 5 years later, I am blessed with a growing audience through my writing and FB Livestreams.
That I am able to monetise what I have been learning for the past 11 years and changing people's lives, one Bazi at a time.
What's more astonishing was I self-taught myself into doing up videos on the topics that matter most to my heart.
Watching YouTube make my dreams come true. #yesmumthatstrue
You may have read that I produced a Vesak Day video, a Mothers' Day video, a Summer Health Guide and a Father's Day video for Shifu in the last 2 months. Their combined total views are over 3000.
It felt bittersweet to hear from my husband he liked my videos.
You see, years ago, when I was crippled by my business, I asked the Husband if his company needed a marketing person for their social media.
I thought they could do better in their FB marketing and gave him a lot of ideas.
The husband brushed me off, saying that his boss was unlikely to have the budget to take me in. I tried bargaining for just $200/mth for trial. But was turned down flat. #stingy
I was forced to come out and do something on my own. #女人當自強
Life feels like a Ferris wheel of deja vu sometimes.
2001. My first attempt in doing videos started in NUS Buddhist Society. I was sought to be the Vice-Chairperson in the Freshmen Orientation Camp committee. At that time, my mum bought a Sony camcorder and somehow we came up with the idea of doing a video, introducing Buddhism to the freshies, modelled after the 城人雜誌 variety show.
We went to a few temples in Singapore, of Tibetan, Mahayana and Theravada linages, showcasing the difference in various styles of prostration and offerings. My Chairman Vincent Kwan and another Comm. member starred in the video, while I did the voiceover and shooting.
I had to beg my Bizad friend who was a whiz in IT stuff, to help me edit. I parked like an owl at his home for several nights till after midnight.
Despite all the efforts we put in, the video wasn't well-received by the freshies. They felt Buddhism is one complicated maze after watching it. But the seniors liked it.
I learnt the importance of understanding my target market and perceived customisation.
Not that I understood that better when I did businesses.
I only got it after I became a Feng Shui practitioner and marketing online for a year through more trial and error.
Before the few videos I did this year, I had produced videos for Shifu a few years back. They received generally good response on his budding FB page. Despite being very low key, he has major underground Peach Blossom Luck and much goodwill among his clientele after all.
But nothing like these recent videos that get shared 11-13 times, with reach over 500-600% of the page's fan base.
I don't know what clicked inside me this year, to be able to produce videos that people like.
To be able to do FB Lives that get shared, reacted and commented, and be told that I'm natural on screen, when I used to have onscreen fright.
Feels like Disney magic at work, doesn't it? (Okay, I admit I used Feng Shui.)
I look back and discover life is a game of arithmetic.
My story-telling competitions in primary school.
A librarian in secondary school.
My leadership roles in JC and NUS.
My key role in project presentations in Uni.
Door-to-door and telephone surveys.
A barista in Coffee Bean.
Modelling for Carrie's.
A banquet waitress at Royal Scotts (where the fish head flew onto the table, sauce and fish eyeballs and all, as I was cutting up the fish)
Tutoring children.
Meeting tens of thousands of passengers in SQ.
Being the merchandiser, photographer and graphics designer for my failed blogshop business.
Tagging along the generous and strict Shifu, who taught me for free all these 11 years.
Knowing Sam Choo and Tavia Wong, in 2015 July, opened up my eyes to the IM world and learnt branding + FB marketing knowledge that my NUS professors miss out.
The rejections, the failures...
Take out any one of these, and I would lose that courage, gungho-ness, eloquence, marketability and skilfulness in handling people and trying new things, that you see now.
I sometimes see clients who lament about their less-than-desirable family backgrounds.
Or their companies who do not give them the pay and environment they crave.
Or their partners who always hold them back.
They tell me their dreams and ask me what they can do.
I would eagerly tell them their favourable elements and industries to work in.
Over time, I observed clients can know how to use their favourable elements, and yet have massively different results.
The difference lies not just in their attitude towards life, but what skills they have amassed over the years.
People have dreams, but few make serious effort to gain a skill that will push them an inch closer to their aspirations.
Or they get so caught up in life's dramas that they forgot they can.
I have seen too many clients resigned to tough life. Especially those with children.
It's like they have bid farewell to Life, before they even get near the coffin. #趕去投胎嗎
My Bazi indicated that I would be doing what I studied as a career.
I was telling Shifu, strange that I wasn't.
He told me, I was. With all the heavy duty articles I post on FB, the copywriting I learnt, landing pages, 50 over FB Livestreams, 11 workshops, I am marketing Chinese Metaphysics and Dharma.
Derrick, my web designer, remarked that he had never seen a geomancer who does marketing online the way I did. Very different from what he had seen.
I realised they are right. I am very marketing-slanted in the way I do things. NUS Bizad will be so proud of this alumni.
On my down days, I would think it is too late for me to be doing all these when I'm hitting 40.
On my up days like today, I would think if not now, when?
The more you practice, the more polished you get at doing something.
You have seen me at my most amateurish on FB, writing and doing Livestreams.
I hope it had inspired you in one way or another. If not for the better, at least don't make the same mistakes I did. Make better ones. 😄

There is only one video uploaded so far. No channel art. No fancy words. No custom URL as I would need 100 subs before I qualify.
That 4-minute video was my very first video on Chinese Metaphysics and got me over 1459 views on Facebook, since 2016 June.
I only have 350+ friends now. Does that mean each of you watch it thrice? 😍
I will gradually edit my FB videos, throw in the subtitles, and upload them on Youtube. It won't be monetised so that next time, you can binge watch my videos with no interruption.
While I have a couple of videos in the pipeline, I do not have concrete plans what I wish to do for my Youtube channel.
But life is a game of arithmetic. As long as I am moving in my favourable direction, I am going to grow into a health stocky broccoli. Non-GMO.

This is one of my favourite duets of all time and the lyrics (and the subtle things behind the song..etc) are very beautiful & meaningful. If you think of anyone while watching this video, I hope you can send it to them to let them know the impact they’ve had on your life.
I have liked For Good since the first time I heard the song and have always wanted to record a cover of it, but never quite found someone I thought would be the right person to sing this song with me. When I started cosplaying as Magnus and later came across the Edom scene in Shadowhunters, where the characters were potentially separating from each other forever, I knew this was it. Plus, there are other similarities between Glinda & Elphaba in Wicked and Alec & Magnus from Shadowhunters (feel free to comment to let me know what you come up with).
Doing a cover of this song while cosplaying characters from one of my favourite shows, I knew I had to go the extra mile. The amount of time and effort spent along with the things I had to learn, get and do to pull it off was kind of insane, but worth it at the same time (lost track of how many all-nighters were involved.

I visited these places while on holiday so this is not your typical "what I eat in a day". Also, yes most of these places are not in LA itself but near LA. Which are btw places that I recommend you to check out! Alhambra and Pasadena are so nice! Enjoyed almost everything that I ate in these couple of days and I can't wait to go back one day to try even more food places! Hope you like this vlog and see you in my next video!
