I used to hate saying no. I used to want to say yes and hoard everything, thinking:
💭 “What if these opportunities don’t come around again?”
💭 “What will they think if I say no?”
💭 “Will they not ask me again in the future?”
So I’ve tried many way of saying no - like making excuses, and I’ve tried to delaying replying, or I’d postpone saying no with “I’ll get back to you..” or “let me check my schedule”.
And when I had said yes when I really meant no 🛑, I ended up resenting doing whatever I said yes too.
I realised it’s something that I have to let go of.. being everything to everyone. I have to stop saying no when it’s not a “hell yes”.
It was hard at first. Part of the reasons I hired assistants to answer my emails is so that they can say no on my behalf. But overtime, it gets easier.
These days, I say no unapologetically. It’s a no, full-stop. And most of the time, people are ok with that. Because when you say no, you’re freeing yourself and the person asking. Everyone moves on.
