I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.
•a middle-class life 中產階級生活
•set things up 打點一切
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Unfortunately, half a year after we arrived, he left us. That was a huge shock. Our transition had already been quite difficult, as we both didn't speak English. Also, as Shanghai was such a big bustling city, Sydney felt a bit like the countryside, especially on the weekends, as no shops were open back then!
•shock 令人震驚的事件(或經歷);驚愕,震驚 (come as a great shock 讓人倍感震驚)
•a bustling city 繁華都會

We were very much reliant on my dad, not only financially, but also as a conduit into the wider community. So to have that broken was quite distressing. I remember Mum crying a lot. As we had become socially isolated, we didn’t find out anything about Centrelink, so we survived on her savings for a while, and then got some help from her family back in China.
•be reliant on…
•a conduit into 進入...
•distressing (adj.)
•survive on her savings
★★★★★★★★★★★★
Eventually, Mum moved us down to Melbourne, where we were able to make some new networks and family friendships. But I was bullied a bit at school about things like my food and clothing! Whenever someone bullied me, I would defend myself, but because I didn’t have the language skills to explain to the teacher why, I got in trouble quite a bit. I ended up having to move school 3 times before I came to Balwyn Primary School, which was relatively multicultural.
•be able to 能夠
•make new networks 建立新的人脈,關係網
•be bullied 被霸凌
•get in trouble 惹上麻煩
★★★★★★★★★★★★
After that, I did alright. Music featured very prominently in my life. I had started learning the violin from the age of 2.5 years old and even with all the troubles that were going on in my life, had somehow still kept up with it. As a result, I got a music scholarship to Trinity Grammar School. But even there I used to get into quite a lot of mischief, and would often skip school to go to the movies.
•feature (v.)
★★★★★★★★★★★★
By the end of year 11, I was told I would have to either repeat the year, or consider going to another school, which was quite humiliating for my mum. I decided to move school and surprisingly, I ended up doing quite well in year 12! As a result, I ended up getting into a double degree in Law and Music at Monash.
•repeat the year 留級 ; 重唸一年
★★★★★★★★★★★★
When I started, my first thought was that I didn’t belong because I had done so badly in school up to year 11 and everyone else seemed so smart. But I put my head down, got through it, and ended up getting a job in the legal department of a major manufacturing company, which was a different approach to what most law students do.
•do not belong 不屬於這
•put my head down 埋頭苦幹
•the legal department of ...
•a different approach 不同途徑
★★★★★★★★★★★★
I really enjoyed it. It was hard work, but I learned a lot of foundational business, legal and corporate communication skills. After that I worked in corporate governance in RMIT, then started to moonlight as a lecturer in the Law Faculty. Eventually, they asked me if I wanted to do a PhD and I blindly said yes! I next worked at Swinburne University, and then was head-hunted to lead the corporate legal team at the Commercial Passenger Vehicles Commission.
•corporate governance
•moonlight (v.)
•headhunt (v.)

I had a good life, but after a while, I realised I wanted a different kind of job. I could see my seniors were making a lot of money but that their family life was not that good. And looking at my own upbringing, I wanted to be the kind of father who could be present in my own kids’ lives. So I decided on dentistry. It would not only allow me to use the hand skills that I had developed from playing the violin, but also the analytical and reasoning skills that I'd developed in law. Plus it would be flexible, and offer me a stable income and the chance to meet different people every day!
•analytical and reasoning skills
•offer a stable income

My now fiancée, who was my girlfriend at the time, was also applying for further study, and coincidentally we both got into university in South Australia, so we moved to Adelaide together a few years ago.
•fiancée 未婚妻
•at the time 當時
•apply for 申請

I was lucky to get a university job at Flinders University. Initially, I started out as a casual lecturer in the law school, but I’ve since transitioned into teaching health law and research, and I’m currently writing a few books on the intersection between law and medicine. And also, obviously, trying to finish my dentistry degree!
•start out as…
•transition into…

Mum eventually retrained as a Chinese high school teacher, and she’s still teaching to this day. Like most first generation migrants, she struggled quite a lot, and invested heavily in my success. After we’re married, my fiancée and I are planning to have children, and I’m sure they will have it much easier than I did.
•to this day 至今
•have it much easier

Milan Marathon
Result: 2:31’24 (updated)
Position: 18/28
Start time: 6:30am
===================================

Race reflection:
This time I was totally defeated by the big tiles of Rome. Other foreign competitors were striving like flying, but I was struggling. The longest section of such road was about 1km. After half of the race, I got twisted my foot twice, which affected the muscle power leading to sharp drop in pace🤯
===================================
Racing details:
0-5km:
The first lap starts from "heart" to “I” When we love the others we must first know how to love ourself. As the saying goes, love your neighbor as yourself, so the conference has this arrangement. At the beginning, I stayed at the second group with a few men leading the way. The goal was 22930 and the pace was very accurate.
5-12.5km
From 2nd lap on the route will be U->❤️-> I. This lap is to thank the Lord and it is my honor to be on the battlefield. Rome brick road is everywhere in the race, but the U-shaped route is the longest. Every time I pass, I will leave behind the second group, but the first 10 km is still within budget time.
12.5-20km:
I was thrown a little further away again from the 15 kilometers of the 3rd lap. The man who had been leading in front of me began to pant and slowed down little by little. The pace was no longer 330. I started to be nervous as the time could not keep up. Once I wanted to break through, but he continued to try and lead the front. And I had to hide behind in the headwind, because the second pack girls were too far away from me. In addition, my stomach was gurgling. Perhaps my private drinks have been kept for too long from
last evening and not fresh enough for my weak stomach.
20-27.5km:
Therefore I did not drink or water only in the following two stations of the 4th lap. Yes, the stomach discomfort was reduced and I tried to increase the speed to cross the U section of the big brick road. However, as a result, the sugar was dried quickly. At this moment, my left foot was twisted twice. I didn’t notice at first, but later on I found that there’s problem of exertion. And I could not count how many laps to go la.. On the way, I saw a Kenyan female competitor lying on the ground, and my heart was 🥶
27.5-35km: I felt lost from the 5th lap. Are there still two laps left? How many km did I run? Because some sections of the road are repeatedly passing by, the road signs are full of numbers, and my head is lack of sugar and oxygen... The only thing I realised is that it is slim to meet the Olympic qualification time. Nevertheless, 114 Italian athlete Anna and her two leading friends came up suddenly, which made me continue to move on.
35-42.5km:
On the 6th lap, so great that it’s the last time to pass the U-segment long brick floor. Of course, I was thrown away again. The pain in my left foot was more obvious. I could only keep staring at 114’s back. When her teammate said "Goker” Anna, I thought of my daughter Yelena. And also on behalf of Hong Kong, I have to run hard.
Before crossing the line, I didn’t dare to look at the clock because I didn’t dare to face the facts 🥺
I am Eliminated.
With 2-3-1 only.
The second half is such horrible. But this is my ability.
Three-seven confidence. Number bib 127 even more clearly divides three into one-two: 1 point for hesitation and 2 points for confidence.

Two weeks back. Again. The routine of picking up Kingston from school. As there were no convenient parking nearby that day, I parked a distance away and walked to the usual spot to wait for him.
"Rrrrriiinnngggg", school bell rang , signaling the dismissal for the day.
School children being released from their classes these days really follow the social distancing guidelines. Bravo!
After 25 mins, the flow was over. Even his last class session teacher Puan Harni drove out of the school. No sight of my son at all.
"Walao eh, this fella sure went somewhere in school to play with friends", I told myself.
With the scorching noon sun and me getting all sweaty on top of wearning a face mask, I decide made my way into the school trying to find him. Before my third step, I saw him.
I saw him. Not alone. With a girl classmate. Giggling. Smiling. Laughing. The girl sported a ponytail. Attractive. A bit resembling Kingston's mother.
I cant control my inner excitement too when I shouted," Oi Kingston, so happy ah?" He was stunned straight away, face became "malu malu kucing" then ran towards me. Haha.
In the car.
"Pa, can i ask you something?" asked Kingston with still some blushes on his face; and I nodded my head in agreement.
"What made you like Mommy?",he asked.
While giggling in my heart, I put on the traditional father face and gave him the whole lecture of "studies comes first for the next ten years".
I glanced at him. He glanced at me back sternly, demanding for an answer.
"I like your mommy because she pretty la. And she good hearted la. And she is also first non-Chinese player to win China Open. Dont play play", I answered proudly.
Kingston immediately grabbed my phone and googled the authenticity of my words. Again, the glance from the corner of his eye.
"Hello pa, you see lah" while showing he what he googled. A photo of a Korean ajumma!
Oh mak kau! Luckily there was no car nearby as I nearly lose control my wheel seeing that photo.
She was actually Bang Soo Hyun. A top player before my time. Then only i realized my mistake in my claim.
Kingston then smirked ,"You forget this still ok. Dont ever forget mommy's birthday in few days time "
I had to detour and buy Kingston a Happy Meal to keep his mouth shut for my embarrassment.
Doesnt matter she is not the first non-chinese player to win China Open, to me she is still the best female player in my eyes. Ever. More importantly , she is the best mother, best wife and best companion one can ever have.
Happy birthday, my love, my superwoman @Mewchoo. To many birthday celebrations together down the road.
To Kingston ; you think your father stupid is it, dare to forget mommy's birthday. Pass you an advice when you read this one day. "The easiest way to remember your wife's birthday is to forget it once."
Happy birthday wifey. Hehe.

For this video, we went down to Wolfgang’s Steakhouse at Robertson Quay to savour a $1000 Steak Mukbang! Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, founded by Wolfgang Zweiner, specialises in 28-day dry-aged USDA Prime Black Angus Steak served in an upscale setting. Their steak is aged in their in-store dry-aging room and USDA Prime grading refers to the highest possible steak grade given by the US authorities. Dry-aging is a process where meat is placed in a controlled environment (temperature and humidity) to enhance the flavour profile and texture, creating a deep, “meaty” flavour. The ambience is exceptional with a clear view of the Singapore River, high ceilings, an expansive bar and mahogany flooring.
For my mukbang, I ordered a Porterhouse for Four ($382), Rib Eye Steak ($148), Filet Mignon ($125), Onion Rings ($20), Lobster Mac N’ Cheese ($30) and Cream of Corn ($17). For dessert, I got Key Lime Pie ($17). To pair with the steak, I also requested for a bottle of red wine. The star of the show was the enormous porterhouse steak, served on a blistering hot plate that was previously under a broiler. It contained the best of both worlds, a divinely tender filet mignon and a sumptuously flavourful strip steak. Still affixed to the bone, the whole piece was probably around 2KG of dry-aged goodness. Thanks to the dry aging process, the meat truly encapsulated the signature deep “meaty” flavour that dry aging is known for with the tenderness to match.
As for the sides, the Lobster Mac N’ Cheese never fails to impress. Whipped up with 3 types of cheeses and filled with large chunks of lobster, the side was not overpowering or too heavy as it can tend to be. It was elegantly balancing right on the precipice of too much and too little in terms of flavour. I also had my favourite dessert, Key Lime Pie. It was similarly well-balanced and I could rich notes of the condensed milk used in the batter and the fragrance of lime. The crust was a delicate biscuit base that gave some bite to the soft interior of the pie.
It will come to no surprise that this was a thoroughly enjoyable mukbang for me. The food was stellar from the wonderful dry-aged steak to the sides and dessert. Pairing the meal with an excellent glass of wine only elevated it even further. However, as I ate with Mervin, I underestimated his capacity and realised that I could have eaten significantly more. I look forward to attempting a greater challenge in the future with Wolfgang’s Steakhouse. If you are looking for a classy atmosphere, ridiculously good food and drinks to match, look no further than Wolfgang’s Steakhouse. Do head over there, especially for special occasions for your loved ones. They deserve this treat!

In this episode, we headed down to The Goodburger at Coronation Plaza to beat an Undefeated 20 x 20 Impossible Burger Challenge! The Goodburger is a food truck that serves up Impossible patty burgers and vegetarian sides like nuggets and fries. Food trucks are already uncommon in Singapore, but one that serves plant-based meat and has an entirely vegetarian menu is particularly unique. They even offer vegan options for their burgers. Completing the challenge within 20 minutes makes the food free, but failure means you have to pay upwards of $100 for the meal. Goodburger has made this an official challenge for the public, so please come down to beat my timing and get a free meal to boot.
For this challenge, all 4 of the burgers that Goodburger offers were carefully skewered into a gigantic tower with each burger supercharged with 5 patties, making it a 20-patty burger. On top of that, onion rings, fries, churros and nuggets were piled around the tower, forming a formidable challenge.
The Impossible burgers were excellent, with the Classic being a standard cheeseburger, Black Tie having truffle aioli and rocket leaves, Happy Days with onion rings and BBQ sauce, and One Night in Bangkok being Thai-inspired with a lemongrass-galangal flavoured sauce. The burgers were indistinguishable from your standard beef burgers in sight, flavour and texture, with the centre of the patties still being pink. I am hard-pressed to think of a beef burger at the same price range that I would consider superior to Goodburger’s burgers. What really brought together the burgers were the special sauces used for each type which elevated the Impossible patties greatly and gave each burger a distinct character.
The sides were decent. I originally thought the nuggets contained meat, but to my surprise it was entirely vegetarian. The onion rings and fries were crisp and well-seasoned although they needed a dipping sauce that I was not offered. The churros had the signature cinnamon-sweet flavour to them that was not overly strong and were appropriately crispy on the outside while chewy in the middle.
I completed the challenge in the nick of time at just under 20 minutes. It was not as easy as I thought it would be and I was also enjoying the challenge a bit too much. The “meat” is entirely plant based and the authentic red beef colour comes from an identical chemical extracted from soy plants. According to Impossible Foods, this alternative uses 95% less land and 85% less water than the equivalent beef production, while still not comprising on taste. Head down to The Goodburger for excellent guilt-free burgers!
